A downbeat mood across international equity markets coupled with extensive profit-taking in domestic banking and automobile counters dragged Indian stock benchmarks into severe distress on Tuesday. Following an uninspiring start, the indices drifted deeper into negative territory as selling intensified through the trading hours. The key benchmark Nifty breached its crucial psychological and technical support threshold of 22,700 points, while the Sensex witnessed a sharp decline exceeding 488 points. Intense distribution across index heavyweights such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Tata Motors exerted immense downward momentum on overall market sentiment.
Benchmark Indices and Market Breadth Numbers
Selling momentum persisted right from the opening bell, leaving little room for intraday recovery attempts. The 30-share benchmark BSE Sensex dropped 488.35 points or 0.67% to trade down at the 72,283.37 mark. Simultaneously, the 50-share NSE Nifty slid by 146.05 points or 0.64% to settle around the 22,634.10 level. The broader market breadth displayed a fierce tussle between advancers and decliners across the board. Approximately 920 scrips managed to hold onto green territory, while 864 shares suffered losses. Meanwhile, around 174 stocks remained completely flat and traded without any change in valuation.
Auto, Banking, and Metal Counters Lead Top Losers
Trading desks witnessed the heaviest pressure concentrated across automobile, private lending, and metal counters throughout the session. These pockets accommodated the major share of the market's downward drift. Driven by widespread weakness across automotive players, Tata Motors PV witnessed a steep downturn in share value. The private banking domain offered no relief, with market anchors HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank tumbling simultaneously under consistent selling volume. In addition, liquidation across non-banking financial companies and metal producers pushed Bajaj Finance and Tata Steel into the cluster of top lagging stocks.
Pharma and Selective IT Names Cushion the Fall
Despite the prevailing negative sentiment, healthcare and selective consumer-facing shares emerged as key defense pillars for the market. A focused wave of accumulation across pharmaceutical companies propelled Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Cipla to the summit of the top gainers board. In the technology space, HCL Tech successfully defended its intraday advances to trade in positive territory. Furthermore, buying interest surfaced across power utility and essential consumer goods, providing notable support to shares of NTPC and Tata Consumer.
Performance Across Sectoral Indices
From a sectoral perspective, virtually all major indices sank into the red, with Nifty Pharma standing out as the lone resilient pocket. The Pharma index climbed 0.80% to hold firmly at 26,976.15. In stark contrast, Nifty IT shed 0.55%, and Nifty FMCG declined by an identical 0.55%. Other notable sectoral losers included Nifty Services slipping 0.52%, Nifty MNC dropping 0.45%, and Nifty Bank contracting by 0.41%. Meanwhile, the realty, infrastructure, energy, and PSU banking baskets also languished throughout the session, hovering deep in the negative zone.
