Indian equity benchmarks began trading on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, on a decidedly positive footing, shaking off the sharp volatility seen earlier in the week. Fresh institutional and retail interest across major heavyweights propelled the 30-share BSE Sensex up by 0.33 percent at the opening tick, while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty index advanced 0.36 percent. The upbeat tone provided immediate relief to participants following a turbulent close in the preceding session.
Opening Trajectory for Benchmark Indices
In the second trading session of the week, the BSE Sensex advanced by 245.49 points, or 0.33 percent, to commence dealings at 74,249.31. Simultaneously, the NSE Nifty 50 climbed 83.00 points, translating to a 0.36 percent gain, to reach 23,201.60. This morning rebound comes on the heels of Tuesday's trade, where markets initially surged with tremendous momentum before succumbing to heavy selling pressure by the final bell and ending deeply in the red.
Market Breadth Strongly Favours Buyers
The morning trading dynamics reflected broad-based participation across sectors. Within the 30-stock Sensex pack, 27 counters started trading in positive territory, while only 3 constituents recorded early losses. A similar constructive pattern emerged across the broader Nifty 50 universe, where 44 component stocks initiated trades in the green, leaving just 6 names lagging in the negative zone.
BEL Leads Gainers Following Previous Slide
Public sector defense electronic supplier BEL emerged as the top performer among Sensex peers, surging 1.61 percent at the open. The sharp recovery marked a strong turnaround after BEL shares had plunged heavily during Tuesday's turbulent session. Conversely, private banking major HDFC witnessed cautious positioning, slipping 0.51 percent to record the steepest opening contraction among index constituents.

Minor Drag Seen in Select Heavyweights
Despite the prevailing optimism across most industry verticals, a handful of names faced early headwinds. Alongside HDFC, these stocks comprised the narrow minority that traded in the red during the morning bell.
