Precious metals continued their upward trajectory in trading on 21 August 2026, fueled by robust safe-haven demand and broader macroeconomic uncertainty. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold prices successfully reclaimed the Rs 1.60 lakh threshold per 10 grams, while silver surged close to the Rs 2.45 lakh per kilogram mark. Both metals remain firmly on track to record their third consecutive weekly gain as international investors actively hedge against inflationary and geopolitical risks.
Global Spot Markets Maintain Strong Footing
In worldwide bullion markets, spot gold traded comfortably above $4,530 per ounce. Simultaneously, spot silver witnessed a rally of over 1 percent, climbing near $69 per ounce. Institutional interest remains notably strong, bolstered by continued reserve accumulation from central banks, particularly China. The underlying demand for tangible assets has offset headwinds created by elevated energy prices, reinforcing gold's position as a primary safe-haven investment choice.
Treasury Yield Buybacks and Crude Oil Movement
Crude oil benchmarks experienced a modest pullback on Friday but maintained elevated valuations overall. US WTI crude remained positioned above $86 per barrel, while Brent crude held steady near $94 per barrel. In fixed income markets, the US Treasury Department announced plans to at least double its long-term debt buyback operations to keep borrowing costs under control. This strategy initially triggered sharp declines in both Treasury yields and the US dollar, although yields later rebounded as market participants questioned whether long-term fiscal pressures could be fully contained.
Geopolitical Risk Factors and Energy Supply Pressures
Energy supply concerns expanded further amid preparations by the United States to implement sweeping new economic sanctions targeting Iran. Elevated crude prices, combined with persistent inflationary friction, have kept investor focus anchored on capital preservation. Even as bond yields fluctuated following Wednesday's pullback, gold retained its price gains, underpinned by sustained investment inflows and global central bank demand.
