Pre-Owned Vehicle Loans Surge More Than Threefold in Five Years to Reach ₹1.3 Lakh Crore

India's used car financing market expanded at a 26.2% CAGR over the last five years to hit ₹1.3 lakh crore in June 2026, outpacing the growth of new vehicle loans.

A major shift is underway in India’s automotive financing landscape as consumers increasingly turn to formal lending institutions to fund pre-owned vehicle purchases. Over the past five years, used car financing has expanded at a pace significantly faster than loans disbursed for new vehicles. Enhanced borrower awareness, combined with simplified loan processing from banks and non-banking financial companies, has firmly established used car financing as one of the fastest-growing credit segments in the country.

Rapid Expansion of the Used Car Financing Market

Data released in a report by credit bureau Crif High Mark highlights the remarkable acceleration of used car loans compared to the broader auto financing market. In June 2021, the used car finance portfolio stood at approximately ₹40,000 crore. By June 2026, this figure expanded to ₹1.3 lakh crore, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.2%. In contrast, the overall auto loan market, which includes new cars, registered a lower CAGR of 17.6%, growing from ₹4.4 lakh crore to ₹9.9 lakh crore over the same five-year period.

Shift Towards Formal Financial Institutions and Sales Dynamics

The steady surge in used car loans highlights a fundamental transformation in buyer preference from cash or informal borrowing to regulated financial channels. Financial institutions, including banks and NBFCs, have introduced tailored and accessible loan products that have built strong consumer confidence. This institutional backing aligns with retail sales trends, where pre-owned vehicle purchases have outpaced new car sales. Currently, about 1.4 used cars are sold for every single new passenger car in India. In terms of annual volume, the used car market handles approximately 60 lakh units each year, whereas new passenger vehicle sales range between 42 lakh and 45 lakh units.

Portfolio Performance and Debt Characteristics

The report also examines credit quality and overdue loan metrics across vehicle segments. The 31 to 90 day overdue rate within used car loan portfolios stands at 3.1%, slightly higher than the 2.1% recorded for overall auto loans. Similarly, for the 91 to 180 day overdue category, used car financing records a 1.0% rate compared to 0.6% in total auto loans. Despite these slightly elevated overdue percentages, lenders remain actively engaged in expanding their pre-owned loan books. The proportion of borrowers carrying more than two active loans remains fairly equal between both segments. However, used car loan borrowers show a higher reliance on unsecured credit, with 9.2% holding personal loans, consumer durable loans, or credit cards, compared to 6.4% among overall auto loan borrowers.

Commercial Vehicle Growth and Market Outlook

Commercial vehicle financing also recorded steady growth, expanding at a CAGR of 20.1% to increase from ₹3 lakh crore to ₹7.4 lakh crore over the five-year timeframe. Overall, asset quality across the broader wheels finance market is stabilizing. These structural trends demonstrate that India’s auto finance ecosystem is maturing into a more balanced, resilient, and customer-centric market.
