Banking operations across India will observe multiple non-working days during August 2026, making it essential for retail and corporate customers to plan their branch visits well in advance. According to the official holiday schedule issued by the Reserve Bank of India, physical branches across various states will remain closed for a total of 14 days throughout the month. These non-working days comprise standard weekend breaks, gazetted national holidays, and a diverse range of state-specific cultural and religious festivals. Customers requiring in-person services such as paper cheque deposits, passbook updates, cash counter transactions, or official documentation will need to schedule their tasks around this holiday schedule.
Mandatory Weekend Breaks and National Public Holidays
The total closure count for August 2026 incorporates six standard weekend break days along with nationwide public observances. Banks will remain shut on all five Sundays falling on August 2, August 9, August 16, August 23, and August 30. Additionally, branch operations will be suspended on the second Saturday, which falls on August 8, as well as the fourth Saturday on August 22, in line with standardized banking rules.
A major national observance in the month is Independence Day on Saturday, August 15. Because Independence Day coincides with a Saturday, stock markets will not observe a separate standalone weekday closure. However, physical bank branches across all states and union territories in India will remain strictly closed on August 15, as it is classified as a gazetted public holiday under the regulatory framework of the central bank.
State-Specific Regional and Cultural Holiday Schedule
In addition to nationwide closures, several days in August 2026 are designated as regional bank holidays tied to local festivals and historical observances. Consequently, branch closures on these specific dates will only apply to designated states and union territories rather than the entire country.
Early in the month, bank branches in Tripura will remain closed on Tuesday, August 4, on account of Ker Puja. Later, on Thursday, August 13, banks in Manipur will observe a holiday for Patriots' Day. Tripura will see another state-wide bank closure on Wednesday, August 19, to mark the birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur.
Towards the end of the month, major festivals trigger regional closures across multiple states. On Tuesday, August 25, bank branches in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh will be shut for First Onam and Milad-un-Nabi. On Wednesday, August 26, closures for Id-e-Milad and Thiruvonam will cover a wider geographical area, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR, Bihar, and Kerala. Finally, on Friday, August 28, banks will observe holidays for Raksha Bandhan and Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and several other participating states.
Continuous Digital Banking and Branch Advice for Customers
While counter services and physical branch doors will be shut on these 14 specified dates, electronic payment infrastructure will remain fully functional throughout the country. Digital transaction systems, including Unified Payments Interface, Immediate Payment Service, National Electronic Funds Transfer, and Real Time Gross Settlement, operate independently of physical branch schedules. As a result, users can perform fund transfers, pay utility bills, and conduct online shopping seamlessly without interruption.
Automated teller machines and cash deposit machines will also continue to supply cash and accept deposits as usual, subject to routine replenishment schedules. However, account holders who depend on physical counter assistance, such as clearing high-value cheques, obtaining banker demand drafts, or opening new accounts, are strongly advised to align their financial tasks with open working days to prevent unexpected delays.
