A significant transition has taken place within the senior leadership echelon of the Indian Army. Lieutenant General Shamsher Singh Virk has officially assumed responsibilities as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff dealing with Capability Development and Sustenance. His appointment took effect on October 1. Prior to taking over this pivotal post, Lieutenant General Virk served as the commander of a crucial operational corps deployed along the western front.
Modernisation Drive and Resource Sustenance
Under his expanded portfolio, Lieutenant General Virk is tasked with steering initiatives tied to augmenting warfighting capabilities, modernising operational inventory, and sustaining asset readiness across regiments. In an increasingly dynamic security environment, ensuring continuous upgrades to defense technologies and maintaining swift operational resilience form the core objectives of this appointment. His oversight spans procurement, equipment lifecycle maintenance, and strategic infrastructure integration.
Superannuation of Experienced Military Commanders
A day before this leadership induction, several senior Indian Army officers concluded their active service and retired on Wednesday. Chief of the Army Staff General Dheeraj Seth formally presided over their farewell, expressing deep gratitude for their unblemished, selfless dedication to the country.
Military authorities noted that the imprint left by these retiring officers extends far beyond tactical engagements on the battlefield. Their decades of strategic expertise, institutional values, and procedural wisdom will continue to serve broader national interests during post-service life. General Seth described their sustained contributions as an enduring chapter of the army's legacy, while extending warm wishes for their future civilian endeavors. This moment marked a dual milestone: inducting fresh leadership while honouring the service of veteran military personnel.
Integrated Defence Staff Milestone and Operational Reviews
In concurrent defense developments, General Dheeraj Seth along with all military ranks conveyed greetings on the occasion of the 26th Raising Day of the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. The leadership reiterated the critical function performed by this unified command structure in fostering jointness and cohesion across the armed forces.
Defensive vigilance remains a heightened priority across strategic sectors. Just last week, General Seth undertook a thorough inspection of forward locations under the Chinar Corps in Jammu and Kashmir. To evaluate ground preparedness, he reviewed the existing security architecture along the Line of Control as well as inside hinterland zones, engaging directly with troops stationed at critical forward posts.
Operation Drishti 2026 and Counter-Terror Preparedness
During the valley inspection, the Army Chief assessed tactical measures under 'Operation Drishti 2026' in the Tangdhar sector. His field assessment reflected the core motto of operational vigilance and personal commitment to every soldier. Local commanders operating under the Northern Command briefed the Army Chief on prevailing threat dynamics along sensitive ridges. The briefings detailed ongoing efforts to expand tactical capabilities, enforce airtight monitoring mechanisms across the Line of Control, and conduct precision counter-terrorism operations throughout internal sectors.
