The Siliguri region is considered strategically sensitive because it forms the narrow corridor connecting India's northeastern states to the rest of the country, and it lies close to the borders of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The Jumagachh outpost, where Amit Shah's visit took place, is part of the BSF's surveillance and deployment network guarding this sensitive stretch. Concerns over border security in this belt are not new. West Bengal's Governor recently said that several stretches of the India-Bangladesh border remain unfenced, and that this gap in physical barriers was compromising security in the region.
BSF's recent operations
So far this year, the BSF has seized around 200 drones and 287 kilograms of heroin along the India-Pakistan border, figures that highlight both the scale of smuggling and infiltration attempts the force faces and the extent of its counter-operations. Separately, the human cost of border duty was visible in Manipur, where BSF families suffered losses during recent violence, with soldiers' children killed while their fathers remained on duty guarding the nation's frontier. That episode has been cited as a stark reminder of the conditions under which BSF personnel and their families live even as the jawans continue their duties far from home.
What Amit Shah has said about the BSF before
This is not the first time Amit Shah has spoken about the force in such terms. At the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the BSF held in Bhuj, Gujarat, he had lauded the organisation's decades of service, and on another occasion he said that BSF soldiers had safeguarded the honour and ambitions of Bharat. Those same themes resurfaced in his latest post from Siliguri, where he again described the BSF as the shield that protects the nation's honour, this time backing the message with visuals from his visit to the Jumagachh outpost.
