If you are planning a trip abroad, whether for a holiday or work, and want to get behind the wheel yourself, the first question that comes to mind is whether your Indian driving licence will be valid there. The truth is that every country has its own set of rules. In some places your Indian licence works without any hassle, in others you need an International Driving Permit (IDP), and there are a few countries where the Indian licence is not recognised at all. Let us break it down country by country so you know exactly what applies where.
No Luck in China and Japan
In neighbouring China, you are not allowed to drive on the strength of an Indian driving licence. Even a standard IDP is not considered valid there. To drive in China, you first have to obtain a temporary local licence, and only then can you take the wheel. Japan tells much the same story. Both the Indian licence and the ordinary IDP are barred there. To drive yourself in Japan, you need to arrange a special government IDP before you can venture onto the roads.
The US and UK Give You a Pass
Interestingly, despite having very strict traffic rules, both the United States and the United Kingdom let you drive on an Indian driving licence. In the US you must carry an IDP for this, whereas in the UK you can drive directly on your ordinary Indian licence with no additional paperwork required. That said, following local rules is mandatory in both places. As for the time limits, in the US you can drive on an Indian licence for roughly 3 to 12 months, while in the UK the permitted period is up to one year.
Canada and Australia Have Their Own Terms
Canada and Australia also accept the Indian licence, but with conditions attached. In Canada you must carry an IDP alongside your licence, and with it you can drive for 60 to 90 days. Keep in mind that different provinces in Canada may have different rules on this duration. Similarly, many states in Australia require an IDP along with your licence, and the driving period there can range from 3 to 12 months depending on the state.
The Language Catch in Germany and France
The doors are open to driving on an Indian licence across Europe too, provided you meet a few conditions. In Germany an IDP is mandatory, and it is best if your licence is in English or your IDP is issued in German. With these documents you can drive in Germany for up to 6 months. France follows a slightly different rule, allowing you to drive on an Indian licence for 6 to 12 months, but here you need both an IDP and your documents in French.
How the Rest of Europe Handles It
Most European nations permit driving on an Indian licence as long as it is paired with an IDP. Countries like Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Portugal and Greece allow you to drive for a maximum of 6 to 12 months. However, an IDP is compulsory in all of these places, and most European countries will accept a licence or IDP only if it is in English.
The Conditions in Gulf Countries
The Gulf nations also offer the facility to drive on an Indian driving licence. In the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, you must carry an IDP along with your Indian licence. On top of that, the permitted driving period in these countries is limited. If you want to drive there for a longer stretch, you will need to get a local licence. So it is wise to arrange your IDP in India itself before heading to these countries.
Nepal and Bhutan Are the Easiest
India's neighbours Nepal and Bhutan offer the most relaxed rules when it comes to driving. In both these countries you can still drive on an ordinary Indian licence, and you do not even need an IDP. That said, this relaxation applies only for a limited period. If you wish to drive there long term, obtaining a local licence or permit becomes necessary. All in all, the smartest move before flying out is to learn the rules of your destination country and carry an IDP wherever it is needed.
