Overnight From Mumbai to Bengaluru: The 180 kmph Vande Bharat Sleeper Set to Run via Pune and Hubballi

Indian Railways is preparing to run a Vande Bharat Sleeper between Mumbai and Bengaluru that could cut the journey to roughly 15 to 17 hours at speeds up to 180 kmph. The launch date, fares and timings are still unconfirmed.

The trip between Mumbai and Bengaluru could soon get faster and far more comfortable, with Indian Railways preparing to launch the Vande Bharat Sleeper on one of the country's busiest long-distance corridors. The premium train aims to close the gap between ordinary express services and flying by pairing higher speeds with modern onboard facilities built specifically for overnight travel.

Railways has not yet officially announced a launch date or an operating schedule, but the proposed service has already stirred strong interest among regular travellers. Business professionals, IT employees, students and tourists who shuttle between Maharashtra and Karnataka are watching the plan closely.

The Mumbai to Bengaluru corridor sees heavy passenger traffic all year round. Flights remain the quickest choice, but they are not always easy on the wallet. Existing express trains offer affordable fares yet usually eat up close to a full day to finish the run. The upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed to change that maths, delivering a faster rail option without giving up on comfort. If the operational plans hold, it could become one of the most in-demand overnight trains in the country.

The Likely Route Between the Two Cities

Indian Railways has not released an official route map yet. However, planning documents suggest the train is likely to run between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai and KSR Bengaluru. The proposed alignment is expected to take in major railway hubs such as Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi and Hubballi before pulling into Bengaluru.

These are not just big commercial centres, they also handle huge daily passenger movement. Picking this corridor could sharpen connectivity while serving a broad mix of travellers, from daily business commuters to families and holidaymakers.

Journey Time May Fall From 22 Hours to Around 15 to 17

Cutting travel time is expected to be the single biggest draw of the new sleeper service. Most trains running between Mumbai and Bengaluru currently take about 22 hours to complete the trip. Road travel by luxury buses generally takes around 16 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to trim rail travel to nearly 17 hours, and some operational assessments suggest the run could eventually be finished in roughly 15 hours, depending on the final schedule and the number of stops. A shorter trip combined with overnight running would let passengers leave one city in the evening and reach the other the next morning, making far better use of their time. Unlike the existing Vande Bharat chair car trains built for daytime travel, the sleeper version has been developed with long-distance passengers in mind.

16 Coaches With Room for 823 Passengers

The train will have 16 coaches in all, made up of 11 AC Three-Tier coaches, four AC Two-Tier coaches and one First AC coach, seating a total of 823 passengers. It has been engineered to run at speeds of up to 180 kmph, placing it among the fastest sleeper trains Indian Railways has designed.

Several new features have been added to make overnight journeys safer and more restful. Passengers can look forward to ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning for better sleep on long hauls. Fully air-conditioned coaches, premium First AC cabins and upgraded interiors are set to offer a more modern experience than conventional sleeper trains. The train will also carry automatic passenger doors linked through sealed vestibules, cutting external noise while boosting safety inside the coaches.

What the Timings Discussion Looks Like

No official timetable has been published, but conversations within railway planning point to the train running as an overnight service. A tentative plan under consideration includes an evening departure from Mumbai, a late-night arrival in Pune, a midnight passage through Solapur, an early morning halt at Hubballi and arrival in Bengaluru around 8 AM. Railway authorities have made clear, though, that these timings are still being evaluated and will only be locked in just before commercial operations begin.

Launch Date and Fares Still Awaited

For all the buzz around the project, several key details are yet to be announced. Indian Railways has not confirmed the launch date, ticket fares, stoppage pattern, operating days or booking schedule for the Mumbai to Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper.

What this means for you

  • Across India: Travellers between Mumbai and Bengaluru may get an option cheaper than flying and faster than current trains, letting them leave in the evening and arrive the next morning.
  • In Maharashtra and Karnataka: Passengers in Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi and Hubballi stand to gain better overnight connectivity on this route, though fares and the launch date are still undecided.
