Uttarakhand braces for a week of thunderstorms as IMD flags heavy rain risk across eight districts, from Dehradun to Pithoragarh

The Meteorological Centre in Dehradun has issued a yellow alert for heavy to very heavy rain and lightning across eight Uttarakhand districts, including Pauri, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, on July 4, 2026, with the spell expected to persist until July 9.

The southwest monsoon has turned aggressive over Uttarakhand, and the weather in the hill districts has shifted sharply within a matter of hours. The Meteorological Centre in Dehradun has issued a yellow alert for today, July 4, 2026, warning of heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning across several sensitive districts of the state. Forecasters say the mountainous regions will bear the brunt of the spell, with intense to very intense thundershowers expected at multiple locations. Given the seriousness of the situation, all disaster management departments and administrative officials have been directed to remain on round the clock alert and stay ready to handle any emergency.

What weather system is driving the rain

According to the latest assessment, a highly active trough currently stretches from Punjab to the north Bay of Bengal at mean sea level, extending up to a height of about 0.9 kilometres above mean sea level. Its effect is pulling strong, moisture laden southeasterly winds through the lower levels of the troposphere, moving from the plains toward the hills of Uttarakhand. At the same time, a fresh western disturbance affecting northwest India has become active, which has made the monsoon even more forceful in the state. Forecasters say the combined effect of these two weather systems will keep monsoon activity at its peak across Uttarakhand for the next five to six days, that is until July 9, with thunderstorms and heavy downpours continuing in most parts of the state.

Heavy rain warning for Pauri, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar

The official bulletin from the Dehradun weather centre states that Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts are likely to see heavy rain at isolated places today. Sudden intense rainfall in sensitive parts of these districts could cause a rapid rise in the water level of rivers and streams, and the local administration has been alerted to this risk. Conditions in Pithoragarh are already challenging, where roughly 9 rural roads remain closed due to the shifting weather and landslides. The administration is working to reopen these roads, but the continuing rain keeps hampering that effort.

Yellow alert and strong winds for Dehradun, Tehri and Uttarkashi

The Meteorological Department has also issued a yellow alert for the capital Dehradun along with the surrounding hilly and plain areas. Dehradun, Tehri and Uttarkashi districts are expected to see dense cloud cover through the day, with light to moderate rain likely at several places. Strong, gusty winds exceeding 30 kilometres per hour are also forecast for these areas. Tehri and Mussoorie have already recorded thundershowers over the past 24 hours, bringing down temperatures and adding a chill to the air.

Torrential rain in Chamoli, humid heat in Rudraprayag

The border district of Chamoli has seen another shift in weather, with intense, torrential rain now underway in several strategic and rural pockets, prompting extra precautions along the Char Dham Yatra route. Rudraprayag district, on the other hand, is delivering both relief and worry at once. Rain has currently paused there and conditions are normal, but the lull has left local residents dealing with intense, humid heat. Despite this pause, the warning for lightning and intense showers remains in force for the mountainous parts of both Chamoli and Rudraprayag.

Lightning risk in the plains of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar

Weather in the plains districts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar is expected to stay mixed. According to the IMD's report, both districts could see thunder and lightning along with light to moderate rain at isolated places. Pantnagar in Udham Singh Nagar recorded a maximum temperature of 32.4 degrees Celsius on a recent day, the highest anywhere in the state. Authorities have issued a strict advisory against taking shelter under open fields, trees or electric poles during thunderstorms.

Kumaon region also on alert: Nainital, Almora and Champawat

The monsoon is fully active across the Kumaon division as well, covering Nainital, Almora and Champawat districts. Several parts of these districts are expected to see thundershowers today. The department has clarified that the pace of rainfall in the Kumaon region will pick up further on July 05 and July 06. Given the heavy influx of tourists in Nainital and Champawat, the administration has ordered special monitoring of landslide prone zones to help avoid any untoward incident.

Five day district wise forecast

The Meteorological Department has also released a detailed district wise forecast chart covering July 4 to July 7. It shows continued risk of lightning and intense showers over hill districts such as Pauri, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar, alongside thunder with light to moderate rain in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. The mountainous parts of Dehradun, Chamoli, Champawat, Nainital and Bageshwar are expected to face a continuing threat of lightning and heavy downpours. Meanwhile Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and Bageshwar are likely to see heavy rain and lightning across both their plains and hilly stretches. The department has made clear that the coming days will remain highly weather sensitive for Uttarakhand, and it has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during this period.

What this means for you

  • Across India: This intensifying monsoon activity in the hill state could influence weather patterns across northern India in the coming days as moisture laden winds continue moving that way.
  • In Uttarakhand: Travellers and Char Dham Yatra pilgrims heading toward districts like Pauri, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Chamoli and Uttarkashi should prepare for landslides, road closures and sudden heavy rain over the next five to six days.
  • In Uttarakhand: Residents in the plains areas of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar should avoid standing under open fields, trees or electric poles during thunderstorms.
