Indian cricket has witnessed numerous talented players who received only a fleeting chance at the highest level before fading out of the national reckoning. Middle-order batter Rajat Patidar appeared to be heading down a similar path after finding himself cast aside following minimal opportunities. However, turning out for India A against Australia A, Patidar has issued a resounding statement to the national selection committee by compiling consecutive half-centuries, firmly reviving his case for a recall to the senior squad.
Rajat Patidar Anchors India A Innings Against Australia A
Patidar's one-day international experience at the senior level remains restricted to a solitary appearance. That lone outing arrived during India's tour of South Africa in 2023, where he featured in a match in December 2023 and contributed 22 runs. Following that game, he was omitted from the setup and has not been picked for the national 50-over side since.
Despite the lack of opportunities with the senior team, Patidar maintained his run-scoring rhythm across domestic competitions without earning a call-up. In the ongoing one-day series between India A and Australia A, where most of the visiting batting lineup failed to deliver and collapsed under pressure, Patidar stood tall and registered consecutive fifties across both fixtures to anchor his side.
Resilient Knocks Fail To Avert Defeat But Highlight Value
During the opening match of the series against Australia A, Patidar produced a brisk innings under testing circumstances, scoring 53 runs off 51 deliveries with the help of five boundaries and a six.
He carried that solid touch into the second match as well, constructing a composed 67 off 81 balls that featured three fours and a maximum. While India A could not capitalize on his efforts to secure victories in either match, making his contributions ultimately go in vain regarding the match results, Patidar effectively showcased his reliability and mental fortitude when the rest of the batting unit struggled.
Test Outings And The Awaited T20I Debut
Looking at his broader international ledger, Patidar has represented India in three Test matches, tallying 63 runs across those outings. In the shortest international format, he has yet to make his T20I debut for the country. It remains to be seen whether these back-to-back gritty half-centuries against a quality Australian attack will persuade selectors to hand the batter another run with the senior Indian squad.
