Afghanistan has once again been rattled by earthquake tremors, sending frightened residents rushing out of their homes into open spaces. The exact magnitude of this latest quake has not yet been confirmed in initial reports, though tremors are becoming an all too familiar occurrence in the region this year.
A Year Marked by Repeated Tremors
Over the past several months, Afghanistan has recorded one earthquake after another. On September 1, tremors were felt across a stretch of India from Jammu and Kashmir to Sikkim, with Afghanistan also shaking around the same time. Before that, on August 14, a single day saw as many as five separate quakes recorded across Himachal Pradesh, Nashik and Afghanistan.
The 6.2-Magnitude Quake of June 27
On June 27 this year, Afghanistan was struck by a powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake. Its impact was so widespread that tremors were felt across eight different countries. In India, the shaking reached from Jammu and Kashmir all the way to Delhi-NCR, with the epicentre traced back to Afghanistan. Many people ran out of their homes and offices in panic that day.
15 Injured in Nangarhar Province
On August 25, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake was recorded in eastern Nangarhar province, injuring at least 15 people. Earlier, on April 3, a strong earthquake had also hit Afghanistan, with tremors felt as far as Pakistan and India, prompting residents to flee outdoors.
Why the Tremors Keep Reaching India
Afghanistan's geography means that its powerful earthquakes frequently send tremors into neighbouring countries. Regions across India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Sikkim, have repeatedly felt these shocks. That is why, after every fresh quake, people across northern India remain on alert while waiting for official word on the magnitude and epicentre.
