Whenever there is a conversation about the quintessential ideal father or the patriarch of a family in Indian cinema, the name of actor Alok Nath is the first one to spring to mind. From the silver screen to television, he crafted a persona known as 'Babuji' that resonated deeply with viewers across the nation. His portrayal of fatherly figures in films like 'Maine Pyar Kiya', 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun', and 'Vivah' earned him immense recognition and a permanent spot in the hearts of the audience. However, the image of the 'sanskari' father that viewers adore today is only one chapter of his career; he actually began his journey by portraying romantic and even bold characters.

Early Bold Roles

Known for his calm and modest image, Alok Nath once displayed a completely different side in the 1987 film 'Kamagni'. He took on a romantic lead in this project, which featured bold scenes that became a topic of significant discussion at the time, starkly contrasting with the serene image he later perfected.

Choosing Acting Over Medicine

Born on July 10, 1956, in the capital city of Delhi, Alok Nath grew up in a household with a doctor father and a homemaker mother. While his father harbored hopes that Alok would follow in his footsteps and pursue a career in medicine, fate led him toward the world of performance. During his college years in Delhi, his interest shifted toward theater, leading him to join the Ruchika Theater Group. He further honed his craft by spending three years at the National School of Drama.

The First Break and Subsequent Struggles

The year 1980 marked a major turning point when casting director Dolly Thakur visited the National School of Drama to scout for fresh talent for the film 'Gandhi'. After several auditions, Alok Nath was selected for a role, receiving a fee of approximately 20,000 rupees. This project served as his entry into the film industry, yet the road ahead was anything but smooth. Following 'Gandhi', Alok Nath moved to Mumbai but faced a difficult period of struggle, waiting nearly five years before securing his second film role. During these lean years, he stayed active in theater and eventually landed a small part in the movie 'Mashaal'.

Finding His Iconic Niche

His career gained significant momentum after the release of the 1988 film 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'. This launched a series of roles where he was cast as the father or a senior family figure. Over the course of his professional journey, Alok Nath has worked in nearly 140 films and more than 15 television serials. While he was almost exclusively cast as the 'Babuji', he was once offered the role of Jeetendra's father, an offer he chose to decline. Today, Alok Nath remains a household name, synonymous with the traditional values he portrayed on screen.
