Fans of Hindi cinema's classic comedy genre have significant news to celebrate as the long-awaited sequel to one of the mid-2000s' most beloved humor capers accelerates its production setup. Actors Fardeen Khan and Mahesh Manjrekar have officially come on board the upcoming project Malaamal Weekly 2. Rather than carrying forward the narrative from the original film, the creative team has opted to craft an entirely fresh storyline driven by brand-new characters and an expanded ensemble cast.
A Completely Rebooted Narrative Framework
The original Malaamal Weekly, directed by veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan and released in 2006, remains an enduring favorite among audiences. Featuring memorable performances from Paresh Rawal, the late Om Puri, Riteish Deshmukh, and Arbaaz Khan, the film established a high standard for situational comedy. For the new installment, however, the makers are deliberately shunning nostalgia-driven repetition. Instead, they are building a modern, original script designed to deliver fresh comedic situations and unpredictable plot turns tailored for contemporary moviegoers.
Amit Joshi Set to Helm the Project
Directorial responsibilities for the sequel have been entrusted to Amit Joshi, who previously directed the successful 2024 romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. Pre-production work and script development have been underway behind the scenes for several months as the creative team systematically puts together an ambitious star cast. If current schedules progress as planned, cameras are scheduled to roll for principal photography starting in November 2026.
Casting Choices for Fardeen Khan and Mahesh Manjrekar
The casting of Fardeen Khan comes after the production team evaluated his past record in lighthearted roles and identified him as the ideal fit for a key character in the script. Upon receiving the pitch, the actor gave his immediate assent to join the project. Similarly, Mahesh Manjrekar was signed for an exceptionally quirky character crafted specifically to leverage his comedic range. Known for delivering memorable performances in humor-centric cinema, Manjrekar expressed great enthusiasm for the script and gave his prompt consent. The producers remain confident that his portrayal will serve as a major highlight for viewers.
An Ensemble Featuring Returning and New Talent
The star-studded lineup for Malaamal Weekly 2 has been steadily gaining momentum with several prominent names attached to the bill. Prominent actresses Raveena Tandon and Parineeti Chopra had already secured pivotal roles in the project prior to the latest additions. Joining them is veteran actress Shilpa Shirodkar, who marks her high-profile return to Bollywood after a 26-year hiatus. Additionally, popular internet personality Elvish Yadav and seasoned comedy actor Rajpal Yadav are set to lend their signature humor to the production, promising an eclectic blend of performance styles.
