Veteran director Ram Gopal Varma has landed in serious legal trouble following a monetary claim raised by a film production banner. Eclatant Films Private Limited has served a formal legal notice to the filmmaker, demanding a payment of approximately Rs 29.67 crore. The escalating conflict stems from a business understanding established nearly 16 years ago. Alongside the monetary claim, the production company has also cautioned other producers, film distributors, and OTT platforms against entering into business deals or handling content rights associated with the director.
Payment Deadline Set for October 30
The formal legal communication was dispatched to Ram Gopal Varma on October 15. In the notice, Eclatant Films Private Limited stipulated October 30 as the final deadline for clearing the dues. The claimed sum of Rs 29.67 crore accounts for the original principal obligation combined with accumulated interest over the intervening years. The demand puts significant pressure on the filmmaker regarding financial liabilities stemming from older contracts.
The 2010 Contract and the Mandatory NOC Clause
The origin of this dispute traces back to an agreement signed between both parties in 2010. That contract received further legal validation in 2013 when the Bombay High Court upheld its legitimacy. Under the terms stipulated in the covenant, Ram Gopal Varma was required to obtain an explicit No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Eclatant Films Private Limited before initiating any new movie or creative venture. According to the production company, moving forward on any directorial assignment without securing this clearance constitutes a direct breach of contract.
Notice to Distributors and Streaming Platforms
Eclatant Films contends that the director failed to honor the contractual obligations and went ahead with projects without acquiring the mandated clearances. Citing these ongoing defaults, the company is demanding the complete settlement of Rs 29.67 crore. In addition, the firm has cautioned industry peers, prospective buyers, and digital streaming networks against collaborating with the director, advising them to refrain from acquiring, streaming, directing, or monetizing any projects involving him while the dispute remains active.
