Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the 60th Raising Day celebrations of Chandigarh Police on November 1 as the chief guest. During the diamond jubilee ceremony conducted at the Police Lines grounds, he inspected the ceremonial police parade and received the official march-past salute. Marking this historic institutional milestone, the Union Home Minister formally presented the prestigious President's Colour to the Chandigarh Police, an honour approved by the President of India.
Six Decades of Dedicated Service and Martyrdom Honoured
Addressing the assembled personnel, Amit Shah remarked that conferring the presidential emblem upon the force represents an earned recognition of six decades of selfless service, dedication, and sensitivity toward citizens. He paid tribute to all police martyrs who laid down their lives in the line of duty, stressing that supreme sacrifice for national service remains the highest matter of pride for the entire organization. Since its formation in 1966, Chandigarh Police has steadily built a commendable legacy across the broader history of Indian law enforcement agencies.
Rapid Response Benchmarks and Fleet Modernization
Reviewing nationwide response capabilities, the Home Minister noted that Chandigarh Police currently ranks second across India in terms of swift operational action and effective emergency response times. To bolster operational bandwidth, a new fleet of 141 vehicles was formally inducted into active service during the event. This induction is designed to upgrade field operational capacity, enhance urban mobility, and significantly reinforce emergency intervention networks. With these modern operational assets deployed, the force is well-positioned to secure the top ranking in national emergency response times over the coming year.
Navigating Historical Turmoil to Modern Digital Governance
Situated against the Shivalik foothills, Chandigarh stands out as one of the most meticulously planned urban centers in the country. In his address, Amit Shah recalled that during the challenging years of regional terrorism, Chandigarh was not insulated from those security pressures. Throughout that critical era, police personnel showed exceptional bravery and professionalism to maintain civic security and public peace across the city and surrounding sectors. Today, the operational mandate has evolved toward providing seamless, accessible governance. By rolling out dedicated civic applications and cutting-edge operational frameworks, Chandigarh Police has minimized the physical need for ordinary citizens to visit police stations for standard administrative interactions.
High Vehicle Density, Zero Gridlock, and an 85 Percent Conviction Metric
Chandigarh registers among the highest per capita vehicle ownership rates in India, yet its roadways maintain remarkably consistent and disciplined traffic movement. Reflecting on his own frequent visits across different official roles, the Home Minister pointed out that the city consistently avoids the persistent gridlock seen in other major metros. Operational metrics highlight that the Quick Response Team (QRT) functions with an active response time of just 10 minutes, while general police units reach reported incident scenes within a mere 4 minutes, establishing an efficient operational benchmark for police units nationwide.
Furthermore, under revised legal frameworks, Chandigarh has recorded an impressive 85 percent criminal conviction rate achieved within an expedited window of just 140 days. This performance highlights how systemic implementation of the new criminal codes can accelerate judicial delivery and prevent prolonged legal delays for victims and the general public. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the implementation of the new justice codes from Chandigarh, formally replacing three colonial-era laws. Building upon these structural achievements, the administration remains focused on steering Chandigarh toward becoming a completely drug-free territory.
