However, entering the world of performing arts was never a pre-planned ambition for him. His entry into theater happened completely by chance. One day, he visited a venue purely out of interest to watch a theater group rehearse. During the session, the director noticed him standing nearby and asked if he would be willing to stand alongside four other boys on stage. Kamat readily agreed. Abandoning Hotel Management for Doordarshan and Editing
What began as a simple stage appearance quickly transformed into a deep-rooted passion for acting and storytelling. While performing on stage, his fascination with cinema grew significantly. To secure a conventional profession, he moved to Goa to study hotel management. However, after arriving there, he soon realized that his heart belonged to theater and filmmaking rather than hospitality. Acting on his conviction, he abandoned his studies and returned to seek opportunities in television and cinema.
Initial opportunities were modest, but Kamat treated every task as a learning opportunity. He began his professional career as an assistant on a Marathi television serial broadcast on Doordarshan. In 2005, Nishikant Kamat made his directorial debut with the Marathi feature film Dombivli Fast. The film offered a poignant depiction of a common man's frustrations, societal pressures, and anger against systemic issues. Both audiences and film critics lauded the movie, making it a major success in his career. In 2006, Dombivli Fast was honored with the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi. Securing a prestigious National Award with a debut project established Kamat as a formidable talent. Following this success, he remade Dombivli Fast in Tamil under the title Evano Oruvan, starring R. Madhavan in the lead role.
Directing Blockbusters Like 'Drishyam' in Hindi Cinema
Building on his success in regional cinema, Kamat ventured into Hindi filmmaking in 2008 with Mumbai Meri Jaan. The movie sensitively explored the psychological and emotional aftermath of the 2006 Mumbai train bombings on ordinary citizens. He followed this with the high-octane action film Force, which starred John Abraham and served as the Hindi film debut for actor Vidyut Jammwal.
In 2014, Kamat returned to Marathi cinema to direct the hit film Lai Bhaari. The following year, in 2015, he directed one of his most popular and critically acclaimed Hindi films, Drishyam. Featuring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, and Shriya Saran, the thriller became a huge box-office success and earned widespread popularity. He subsequently directed Rocky Handsome and Madaari. His final directorial venture, Madaari, featured Irrfan Khan in the lead role and portrayed a gripping conflict between an ordinary father and a corrupt political machinery.
