Veteran Indian cinema icon Rekha turned 72, prompting heartfelt public wishes from her longtime contemporary Hema Malini. Beyond their shared history on the silver screen, the two artists share a deep personal camaraderie that traces back to their formative years in southern India. Marking the milestone, Malini shared a compilation of photographs and video clips, expressing hopes for her peer's continued joy, vitality, and well-being.
Early Training and Dance Academy Memories
The bond between both luminaries took root well before either achieved nationwide stardom. Speaking previously during an appearance on the reality show Indian Idol, Malini recounted their early days in Chennai. While Malini was studying Bharatanatyam and learning Kuchipudi under renowned master Vempati Chinna Satyam, a young Rekha attended the same training classes. Malini recalled that Rekha possessed a spirited, playful temperament as a child and would frequently slip away from rehearsal sessions, leaving their dance instructor to round her up.
Stage Ballet and Shared Family Celebrations
Malini also recalled an early stage production centered on the lore of Lord Krishna, Rukmini, and Satyabhama. In that classical Kuchipudi dance ballet, Rekha was cast in the role of the sage Narada Muni, delivering a memorable performance in full traditional attire.
Their connection extended deeply to their respective households. In an unusual coincidence, Rekha's mother Pushpavalli and Malini's mother Jaya Chakravarthy shared the exact same birthday on January 3. Consequently, both households frequently organized joint celebrations to commemorate the occasion together each year.
Cinematic Collaborations on the Big Screen
Throughout their illustrious acting careers, the duo shared screen space across multiple mainstream Bollywood projects. Their collaborative filmography includes titles such as Gora Aur Kala, Kehte Hain Mujhko Raja, Dharmatma, Apne Apne, and Jaan Hatheli Pe. The birthday tribute has once again highlighted one of Hindi cinema's enduring friendships spanning over half a century.
