A trained Bharatanatyam dancer who once thought stage performances were just a childhood passion ended up receiving film offers at home by the time she was 13, a story Waheeda Rehman herself shared in 2019 during an appearance on Kapil Sharma's show alongside Asha Parekh and Helen, when the host asked her how her journey into cinema actually began.
She Calls It Pure Luck
Waheeda Rehman said she considers her entry into films a matter of sheer luck. As a child she trained in Bharatanatyam and performed dance on stage, at a time when most shoots for South Indian and regional films were based in Chennai. That grounding in classical dance became the reason people first took notice of her, long before she ever stepped onto a film set, since industry scouts often kept an eye on stage performers there as well.
An Offer At 13, Then Her Parents Said No
Someone spotted photographs of her stage performances, and by the age of 13, film offers started reaching her at home without her even looking for them. Her parents, however, turned the offers down, saying it was far too early for her to step into acting.
A Hit Telugu Song Changed Everything
Some time later, Waheeda Rehman performed a folk dance number in a Telugu film, and the song went on to become a massive hit. That success brought her a lead role opposite veteran actor N.T. Rama Rao in another Telugu film. The real turning point in her career came in Hyderabad, where she met celebrated filmmaker Guru Dutt. He invited her to Mumbai, and from there her career reached an entirely new level.
From CID To Guru Dutt's Classics
Waheeda Rehman began her career in 1955 with the Telugu film Rojulu Marayi. A year later, in 1956, she stepped into Hindi cinema with her debut film CID, directed by Raj Khosla and produced by Guru Dutt. She went on to collaborate with Guru Dutt on several blockbuster and classic films, including

Guide, Neelkamal, Khamoshi And National Honours
Waheeda Rehman then built a distinct identity of her own in Bollywood with hit films such as Guide, Neelkamal and Khamoshi. In recognition of her contribution to Indian cinema, she was honoured with two of the country's top civilian awards, the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011.
