Bollywood's popular comic actor Javed Jaffrey is set to return to the big screen in his familiar avatar. In the multistarrer film Dhamaal 4, he will be seen playing his character Manav for the fourth consecutive time. The film also features a big ensemble cast including Ajay Devgn, Ravi Kishan, Riteish Deshmukh and Arshad Warsi. During the promotions of the film, Javed Jaffrey opened up on why playing the same character over and over again does not leave him feeling bored or repetitive.
Javed Jaffrey speaks up during promotions
While promoting Dhamaal 4, Javed Jaffrey spoke to a news agency along with director Indra Kumar and actor Arshad Warsi. During the conversation, he discussed his character Manav in detail. He explained that playing a character for a long stretch of time helps an actor develop a stronger grip on that character. It also makes it clear to the actor exactly what the audience enjoys about the character and what it does not.
Does being this comfortable with a character kill the fun?
Javed Jaffrey was also asked whether being extremely confident about a character reduces the enjoyment of playing it. He said it actually becomes even more fun, because he is thoroughly enjoying the character while performing it. He added that he keeps trying to think of new things while staying strictly within that character's boundaries. According to him, he constantly keeps asking himself what more can be added to the character, but the most important part is staying within the limits the character allows.
Strong writing is what makes a character shine
Javed Jaffrey further said that every actor in the film clearly understands the boundaries of their respective characters. According to him, the real reason behind a great performance is strong writing, which naturally brings out the best in an actor. He also pointed out that an actor runs into trouble only when the writing itself is weak. Recalling an anecdote from his father's era, he said people would often tell an actor, sir please do something, the hero has only got two hours of screen time so make it count. Javed Jaffrey questioned what an actor can really do if he is not given good original material to begin with.
He also shared his views on Gen Z during the same conversation. He made it clear that simply cracking jokes about Gen Z is not what the Dhamaal franchise stands for. He said that if a Gen Z character were to be introduced in a future film, that character might naturally blend into that world, but his own character Manav cannot be turned into a Gen Z character.
