A Mumbai court has granted major relief to Bengali actress Rupa Dutta in a theft case registered within the Colaba jurisdiction. Arrested over allegations of stealing valuables and cash valued at approximately 1.48 lakh rupees, the actress secured her release after the Metropolitan Magistrate Court approved bail on a personal bond of 50,000 rupees. However, the judicial relief comes with stringent conditions, barring her from tampering with any case-related evidence and prohibiting her from traveling abroad without prior permission from the court.
Details of the Incident and the Original Complaint
The legal proceedings stem from a formal complaint filed by Marine Drive resident Dimple Singhvi. According to the statements provided, the incident took place on July 12, 2026, while she was traveling from Babulnath Temple toward Colaba. Navigating through heavy pedestrian traffic along the route, her purse went missing amidst the congested surroundings. The complaint highlighted that the bag contained several valuable items and important personal belongings.
Inventory of the Stolen Valuables
Providing a detailed breakdown to law enforcement, Dimple Singhvi stated that the stolen purse held a diamond-studded gold bracelet valued at roughly 1.20 lakh rupees, 10,000 rupees in cash, and Apple AirPods worth approximately 15,000 rupees. Additionally, the bag contained a wallet and critical private documents. The aggregate value of the missing property was estimated at around 1.48 lakh rupees. Upon realizing the bag was gone, the complainant immediately notified local authorities, prompting the Colaba police to launch a formal investigation.
Police Investigation and CCTV Evidence
During the course of the inquiry, investigating officers examined surveillance footage captured by closed-circuit cameras installed in the vicinity. Police authorities stated that the video recordings showed Rupa Dutta allegedly trailing the complainant. Based on these observations, law enforcement linked the actress to the incident and proceeded with her arrest. Investigators also claimed to have recovered a portion of the stolen property from her possession, though the court has yet to deliver a final verdict regarding the allegations against her.
Defense Arguments and Court Ruling
During the bail hearings, lawyer Sunil Patel represented Rupa Dutta and presented her arguments before the bench. The defense counsel argued that the actress had been falsely implicated in the matter and was merely a victim of circumstances. After weighing submissions from both sides, the magistrate decided to grant bail against a personal bond of 50,000 rupees, accompanied by mandates prohibiting evidence tampering and foreign travel without court approval.
Previous Legal Entanglements
This is not the first instance where Rupa Dutta's name has surfaced in connection with a theft investigation. Back in 2022, she was arrested during the Kolkata Book Fair on allegations of pocket-picking. In that prior instance, police claimed to have recovered multiple wallets and 75,000 rupees in cash from her possession, alleging that she targeted crowded public venues by distracting individuals to commit thefts.
