Following a heavy defeat against Bangladesh in Darwin, the Australian team management has made a major squad adjustment for the second Test. Struggling opening batter Jake Weatherald has paid the price for his poor form and been dropped from the team, making way for Matt Renshaw, who returns to the Test setup after nearly three years. This marks the only change in the thirteen-member squad for the upcoming fixture between Australia and Bangladesh, which will be hosted in Mackay.
Weatherald struggled significantly with the bat during the opening Test, managing scores of twenty-three in the first innings and a duck in the second. After playing six Test matches, his career run tally stands at two hundred twenty-four with a modest average of twenty point three six. Although he worked on technical adjustments to his batting stance while playing county cricket during the off-season, he looked uncomfortable against the bowling attack during the Bangladesh series.
On both occasions in the opening Test, Bangladeshi fast bowler Hasan Mahmud claimed his wicket. In the first innings, he edged an attempted drive to give away a catch, while in the second innings, the delivery clipped his bat before crashing into the stumps.
Matt Renshaw Returns to Test Squad After Three Years
Matt Renshaw, brought in as Weatherald replacement, is on the verge of returning to Test cricket after a gap of roughly three years. He had already been training alongside the Australian squad as a backup ahead of the series and is now expected to secure a spot in the playing eleven. Renshaw delivered an impressive domestic campaign in the Sheffield Shield last season, racking up runs at an average of forty-nine point nine zero alongside three centuries. He also caught the attention of selectors in white-ball cricket earlier this year when he joined the squad as a replacement for Matt Short during the T20 World Cup.
Renshaw has represented Australia in fourteen Test matches so far, maintaining an average of twenty-nine point three one. His highest score in Test cricket remains a remarkable one hundred eighty-four runs, which he scored against Pakistan in 2017.
Australia Openers Conundrum Continues
The omission of Weatherald brings the ongoing opening woes for the Australian side back into focus following David Warner retirement. Aside from Usman Khawaja, the team has experimented with seven different opening batters to fill the void left by Warner. Travis Head has cemented his place in this role following stellar performances in the Ashes, but the team has previously tried Steven Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, and now Weatherald in that demanding position.
Pressure is also mounting on Marnus Labuschagne. During the Darwin Test, he managed only one run in the first innings and was dismissed for thirty-one in the second. After getting set at the crease, he committed a costly error against Taijul Islam bowling. Nevertheless, the selectors have granted him another opportunity, though his spot could be on the line in the upcoming Mackay Test.

The thirteen-member Australian squad for the second Test features Travis Head, Matt Renshaw, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Beau Webster, captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, and Scott Boland.
