Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur has looked back at the defining tragedy of her childhood, recalling the harrowing loss of her father Major Bhupender Singh in Kashmir. The incident occurred in January 1994, when she was merely 11 years old. Her father, who was serving in the armed forces, was intercepted and kidnapped by militants on his journey back from official duty and subsequently killed. Major Bhupender Singh was posthumously conferred the Shaurya Chakra for his selfless sacrifice. Despite several decades having elapsed since the horror unfolded, the emotional scars remain raw within her family.
Watching Him Leave for Work and Next in a Coffin
Reflecting on that devastating morning in an interview, the actress recounted that no one in the household had any premonition of the calamity awaiting them. She distinctly remembers watching her father leave home for work in the morning just like any other routine day. That was the last time she ever saw him alive. The next sight she had of her father was directly inside a coffin. She noted that while decades have passed and conventional wisdom suggests time heals all trauma, the profound void left behind in the heart never truly disappears.
Impostor Troops Intercepted Him on the Road
Narrating how the abduction transpired, she stated that Major Bhupender Singh was returning after completing his duties when men disguised in military uniforms flagged him down and took him captive. For the subsequent seven days, the captors unleashed relentless mental agony on the family and local administration by putting forth unreasonable demands. The militants insisted on securing the release of fellow terrorists lodged in Indian detention. With each passing day of that agonizing week, fresh conditions were imposed, plunging the entire household into sheer dread and helplessness.
Relocation From Verinag to Srinagar Amid Deepening Crisis
At the time of the incident, the entire family was based in the valley. Kaur, alongside her mother and sister, was initially staying at Verinag. As the security scenario deteriorated rapidly and perils mounted, authorities moved the family to Srinagar for safety. The harrowing ordeal dragged on until the seventh day of captivity, when the tragic confirmation finally reached them that Major Bhupender Singh had been killed. Later accounts revealed that throughout the grueling days of captivity, her father remained consumed by thoughts of his loved ones.
A Father’s Final Thoughts and Moving to Noida
Speaking with intense emotion, the actress mentioned that her father had explicitly informed his captors about having a family and two young daughters waiting for him. She remains firmly convinced that right up to his final breath, his mind was entirely occupied with his daughters and that his singular wish was to somehow return home safely. In the devastating aftermath of his sacrifice, remaining in Kashmir was untenable. Nimrat Kaur, accompanied by her mother and sister, eventually relocated away from the valley to Noida, settling down near her maternal grandparents to rebuild their shattered lives.
