Completing a decade in the film industry, actress Saiyami Kher has opened up about the unconventional choices and professional hurdles that defined her early career. Her 2016 debut venture ‘Mirzya’, alongside Harshvardhan Kapoor, struggled heavily at the box office and failed to recover its production budget. Despite that initial commercial setback, Kher spent the next ten years taking on diverse roles that gradually earned her steady critical acclaim and audience appreciation. Looking back, she remains steadfast in her belief that artistic substance matters far more than simply chasing commercial hype.
Turning down big productions before her debut release
Even before ‘Mirzya’ arrived in cinemas, Kher was approached with offers for two major feature films. Although she was an absolute newcomer at the time, she chose to decline both opportunities without second thoughts. The key issue was the complete absence of a proper script; the filmmakers merely informed her that the role consisted of two scenes opposite the leading man. Without a cohesive screenplay or clarity on her character's presence, Kher found it easy to walk away from these high-profile projects, refusing to serve as decorative screen presence.
Family heritage, stereotyping, and industry pressures
While Kher was not entirely disconnected from cinema, her journey was far from simple. Her grandmother Usha Kiran was a legendary figure in Marathi cinema, and veteran actress Tanvi Azmi is her relative. Even with this artistic lineage, breaking into Hindi cinema demanded resilience against persistent superficiality. Kher pointed out that emerging performers are frequently judged by their physical looks rather than their talent. During her formative years, people often advised her to date a prominent actor or director to climb the career ladder quickly, and some even suggested undergoing a cosmetic lip job to fit conventional beauty standards.
Choosing character substance over screen time
Kher has consistently maintained that budget size does not dictate the artistic value of an acting job. She prefers securing a significant, well-written character in an independent or modest production over taking a minor background role in a massive spectacle. For her, the duration of screen time is secondary to whether the character drives the narrative forward. This deliberate choice enabled her to navigate the industry on her own terms, turning down hollow visibility in favor of memorable performances that stood the test of time.
Navigating male co-star insecurity and praise for industry veterans
Reflecting on working dynamics on set, Kher also addressed the professional insecurity that occasionally surfaces among male co-stars. She noted that certain prominent male stars do not even allow enough breathing space for a female actress to deliver an authentic reaction shot during a scene. In sharp contrast, she praised the conduct of seasoned figures like Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar, noting that both veterans operate with absolute professionalism and collaborative generosity. Over ten years, Kher's choices show a career built on patience, craft, and self-respect rather than opportunistic shortcuts.
