Veteran Hindi film personality Nana Patekar passed away in Goa on October 8 following a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 75. Because he was not suffering from any prolonged medical condition, the news of his unexpected demise sent shockwaves across the film fraternity and among cinema enthusiasts. While colleagues and admirers flooded social media platforms with tributes praising his decades-long cinematic contribution, Tanushree Dutta revisited the harassment allegations she had previously raised during the MeToo movement. Her comments triggered immediate backlash from online trolls, prompting playback singer Chinmayi Sripaada to step forward in Dutta's defence.
Chinmayi Resurfaces Sona Mohapatra's MeToo Critique on Social Media
Re-sharing a past post by singer Sona Mohapatra on social media platform X, Chinmayi addressed the overwhelming wave of adulation surrounding the late actor. She stressed that people lavishing unreserved praise upon Patekar must acknowledge the gravity of the sexual misconduct allegations previously levelled against him, pointing out that such alleged behaviour was far from an isolated incident.
Mohapatra's original message, written during the height of the MeToo campaign, had underlined testimony from an assistant director who reportedly witnessed the inappropriate conduct directly on set. In that statement, Mohapatra questioned the societal habit of doubting female survivors and perpetually demanding unrealistic amounts of proof. She argued that artistic brilliance should never be conflated with innocence, charitable donations do not automatically define noble character, and dying does not suddenly turn an individual into a saint.
Defending Tanushree Dutta Against Public Scrutiny and Trolling
Deepening her stance, Chinmayi followed up with an extensive post on October 9 specifically detailing the unfair treatment meted out to Tanushree Dutta. She noted that Dutta had initially spoken up about her ordeal back in 2018. When recently attending an event, Dutta was not actively seeking to address questions regarding the demise of her alleged abuser, yet people persistently pressured her for a reaction, only to subject her to harsh trolling afterward.
Distinguishing Creative Talent from Past Misconduct
Chinmayi concluded her remarks by emphasizing that while people are free to admire Patekar's artistic accomplishments on screen, the misconduct claims registered by Dutta remain an equally vital fact that cannot be swept under the carpet. She asserted that death does not transform any human being into an angel, drawing a direct parallel between the discussions surrounding kathak maestro Birju Maharaj and Nana Patekar to remind audiences that artistic mastery does not erase past accountability.
