The opening forty-eight hours of India's annual festive online sales witnessed massive consumer participation, with e-commerce platforms clocking approximately Rs 24,000 crore (Rs 2,40,00,00,00,000) in gross sales. A sharp spike in order volumes powered this early momentum, with mobile phones remaining the dominant driver by total value. According to insights shared by consulting firm Redseer Strategy Consultants, shoppers placed between 8,00,00,000 and 9,00,00,000 orders across major platforms including Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Ajio, and several other digital storefronts.
Expanding Festive Footprint and Tier-2 Demand
The robust start underlines how digital holiday shopping is penetrating deeper into non-metropolitan pockets. Nikhil Dalal, Associate Partner at Redseer Strategy Consultants, noted that the initial two days demonstrated a significant expansion in the scope of festive e-commerce across India. The surge was primarily driven by sheer order volume, with consumers moving beyond smartphone upgrades to spend heavily on fashion, electronics, and home appliances.
Affordable apparel emerged as a major bright spot, largely supported by consumers residing in smaller urban clusters. Dalal highlighted that demand for budget-friendly fashion stood out prominently as buyers from Tier-2 and smaller towns purchased celebratory clothing at accessible price points. Total Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) across the opening two days crossed 2.5 billion dollars (around Rs 24,200 crore), with approximately 6 to 6.5 crore unique buyers completing transactions during this initial window.
Quick Commerce Powers Six-Fold Surge Over Normal Business Days
The festive spike propelled platform GMV to nearly six times the daily average seen during business-as-usual (BAU) operational days. To capture urgent consumer requirements, major players like Amazon and Flipkart leveraged their quick-commerce arms, integrating rapid fulfillment options directly onto their main storefronts. These quick-delivery segments generated four to five times their standard daily GMV, proving to be an instrumental channel for holiday purchases.
Smartphones Lead Value Share Ahead of Appliances
While smartphones retained the top spot in aggregate spending, large home appliances and general consumer electronics expanded at a pace higher than the broader market average. Mobile phone sales captured an estimated 38 to 40 percent share of total transaction value, translating to roughly Rs 9,100 crore to Rs 9,600 crore in gross revenue over the two-day period.
Electronics, Apparel, and Strong Gen Z Traction
Consumer electronics formed the second-largest product basket, securing about 25 to 27 percent of overall spending, which amounts to approximately Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 6,500 crore. The fashion segment contributed between 15 and 18 percent of total sales, representing roughly Rs 3,630 crore to Rs 4,350 crore. Redseer also observed a marked demographic shift in purchasing behavior, with Gen Z shoppers accounting for nearly one-third of all active buyers in the opening stretch of the sales.
