The 1982 Kishore Kumar musical still ruling reels today, while its 1999 remake quietly tanked

The songs of a 1982 musical still dominate social media reels, yet a film built on the very same story 17 years later failed to connect with audiences and flopped at the box office.

Songs like ‘Tumse Badhkar Duniya Mein Na Dekha Koi Aur’ and ‘Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajna’ still stir up romance the moment they reach your ears. Love is a delicate feeling, and saying it out loud in front of the one you adore is never easy. That is exactly where songs step in to carry the heart's words. A 1982 film carries this very magic, and its tunes are now among the most used for reels on social media. What makes the tale interesting is that the same story was filmed again years later, only to fail badly. The two films in question are ‘Kaamchor’ and ‘Raja Ji’.

Let us start with ‘Kaamchor’, which arrived in theatres on 24 December 1982. It was directed by K. Vishwanath, with Rakesh Roshan and Jaya Prada in the lead roles. The story and screenplay were written by K. Vishwanath himself, while the dialogues came from Jainendra Jain. Rakesh Roshan also served as the producer.

The songs that carried it

The music was composed by Rajesh Roshan, and the memorable lyrics flowed from the pen of Indeevar. The music of ‘Kaamchor’ turned out to be a superhit, and much of the film's success was credited to Jaya Prada and these very songs. The film had five songs in all, and two of them became extremely popular. These were ‘Tumse Badhkar Duniya Mein Na Dekha Koi Aur, Zubaan Par Aaj Dil Ki Baat Aa Gayi’ and ‘Tujh Sang Preet Lagayi Sajna’. Both were sung by Kishore Kumar. ‘Tumse Badhkar Duniya Mein Na Dekha Koi’ existed both as a Kishore Kumar and Alka Yagnik duet and as a solo number.

Tensions behind the scenes

The film also featured Suresh Oberoi, Sujit Kumar, Shriram Lagoo and Tanuja in important roles. Suresh Oberoi, however, was unhappy with his part and never worked with Rakesh Roshan again. Neeta Mehta, who appeared in the film, also criticised Rakesh Roshan sharply after its release, alleging that several of her scenes were cut.

‘Kaamchor’ was actually a remake of a 1980 Telugu film made by K. Vishwanath himself. The music was composed by Rakesh Roshan's elder brother, Rajesh Roshan. The role of Rakesh Roshan's nephew was played by Sonu Nigam, who later went on to become a celebrated playback singer. At the box office, ‘Kaamchor’ earned big and proved to be a massive hit.

‘Raja Ji’ arrives 17 years later

Using the same story as its base, a comedy drama titled ‘Raja Ji’ was made a full 17 years later. It was produced and directed by Vimal Kumar, with Govinda and Raveena Tandon in the lead roles. The film released on 21 May 1999. Its music was composed by Anand-Milind and Vishwajeet Mukherjee, with lyrics by Sameer. The film packed eight songs running 41:07 minutes, and the music was a hit too. Numbers like ‘Raja Chalo Akele Mein’ and ‘Sasu Ji Tharo Lalla Machaye Yaar Halla’ became popular.

Why the film sank

‘Raja Ji’ was heavily inspired by ‘Kaamchor’, but audiences simply could not connect with its story. The film was made on a budget of around 4.75 crore rupees and collected 7.57 crore rupees at the box office. The result was that it ended up a flop. In short, of two films built on a single story, one created history while the other faded into obscurity.
