In the annals of cinema history, the film Aradhana played a pivotal role in catapulting Rajesh Khanna to superstardom. On the silver screen, his unmatched chemistry with Sharmila Tagore redefined romance for generations. However, while composing one particular track featuring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, the veteran composer SD Burman hit a creative roadblock.
Inspiration From A 1958 Classic
During the production phase, SD Burman was struggling to come up with a distinct and appealing tune. At that juncture, he recalled a memorable song from the 1958 movie Phir Subah Hogi, which had been composed by Khayyam. Having admired Khayyam artistry since first hearing it years prior, he began humming that classic track originally rendered by Mukesh. Drawing direct inspiration from those notes, he went on to shape the vibrant new melody for Gunghuna Rahe Hain Bhaware.
Khayyam Acknowledged The Creative Nod
The structural pattern and opening meters of both compositions bear a noticeable resemblance. Khayyam himself shared in an interview that SD Burman drew inspiration from his composition to build the new track, describing it as a moment of great honor for him. The song in question is Aasmaan Pe Hai Khuda Aur Zameen Pe Hum. It was originally sung by the legendary playback singer Mukesh and picturized on Raj Kapoor. While both compositions were magnificent in their own right, the latter track ultimately achieved greater commercial popularity.
Legendary Voices Behind The Melody
SD Burman was deeply fond of the rhythm and meter of Aasmaan Pe Hai Khuda, elements he successfully integrated into Gunghuna Rahe Hain Bhaware. The new song brought together the iconic vocal pairing of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. According to media accounts, SD Burman fell ill while working on the soundtrack of Aradhana, prompting his son RD Burman to step in and compose the remaining portions. Ultimately, every single track from the film became a household phenomenon.
Blockbuster Box Office Run
Much like their respective musical scores, both films enjoyed remarkable success at the box office. Aradhana stood out as one of the 17 consecutive hit films delivered by Rajesh Khanna between 1969 and 1971. The movie emerged as a blockbuster in both India and the Soviet Union, claiming the title of the highest-earning film of that year. Meanwhile, the Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha starrer Phir Subah Hogi was also commercially successful, featuring memorable lyrics penned by Sahir Ludhianvi.
