Akshay Kumar's multistarrer comedy action film Welcome to the Jungle is drawing packed houses at the box office, and the film features close to 35 actors in its cast. Before release, Sanjay Dutt's name was attached to the project too, but when the film finally hit the big screen, he was nowhere to be seen. Director Ahmed Khan has now broken his silence on the matter, revealing that Sanjay Dutt had actually begun shooting for Welcome to the Jungle before exiting the project midway, after which Suniel Shetty stepped in to take over his part.
Not a fallout, just a scheduling clash
Ahmed Khan made it clear that Sanjay Dutt's exit had nothing to do with any dispute or creative differences. According to the director, the real problem was that Sanjay Dutt's dates kept clashing with his other commitments, making it increasingly difficult to manage the shoot schedule. Interestingly, Suniel Shetty's character had been written in the same way from the very beginning, meaning the script was never altered for him even while Sanjay Dutt was still attached to the film.
Two days of shooting, then a month-long gap
Ahmed Khan revealed that Sanjay Dutt had in fact shot for two days when the film was first announced. In his words, "This role was always written this way, and that was our plan too. When we first announced the film, Sanjay Dutt shot for two days. But after that, so many issues came up with his dates that Sanjay Dutt had to go away somewhere for an entire month." That one month away threw off the rest of the planning.
Repeated date shifts finally forced a parting of ways
The director further explained that Sanjay Dutt tried his best to rearrange his dates, but things simply did not work out. Ahmed Khan recalled, "When a second minor issue came up, baba said he would shift his dates once again. That made us feel bad, and we told him, baba, we can't keep making you shift your entire schedule again and again. He understood too and said, how much will you people keep adjusting for me anyway? That is the only reason we had to let go of some things." In other words, the decision came from understanding on both sides, not pressure or resentment.
Suniel Shetty steps in as the whole cast rallies together
With Sanjay Dutt out, the biggest question was who would take his place. Ahmed Khan said that despite such a major, last-minute change, the entire cast stood by the film. He said, "Everyone on set was extremely supportive. Sanjay Dutt himself told Suniel Shetty to take up his role, and Suniel then told Jackie Shroff to take on his own role. It shows that everyone genuinely wanted this film to get completed somehow." In effect, as soon as one actor's spot opened up, the rest of the stars worked it out among themselves rather than letting the film get stuck.
How Suniel Shetty's character was shaped
Once Suniel Shetty's entry into the film was finalised, Ahmed Khan decided to lean fully into the actor's own distinctive screen image. The director explained, "Anna's (Suniel Shetty's) own name has Shetty in it, so this name fit his character perfectly." Alongside that, Suniel Shetty also brought back his old signature style and traits from his film Aawara Paagal Deewana for this role. In Welcome to the Jungle, he plays the brother of Uday Shetty, an extremely popular character from the Welcome franchise that was earlier played by Nana Patekar.
An enormous cast of nearly 35 stars
The scale of Welcome to the Jungle's cast is massive. The film includes big names such as Disha Patani, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arshad Warsi and Jackie Shroff. Alongside them, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Farida Jalal, Johnny Lever, Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor and Rajpal Yadav add their own comic touches to the film. The lineup also includes Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, Daler Mehndi, Aftab Shivdasani, Mukesh Tiwari, Yashpal Sharma and Kiran Kumar, among many others, as part of this sprawling multistarrer.
