Big Relief for Onion Farmers as Centre Raises Minimum Assured Procurement Price

The central government has raised the minimum assured procurement price for storage-grade onions to Rs 1,650 per quintal, with the new rate taking effect from June 13.

Keeping the interests of onion-growing farmers in mind, the central government has decided to revise the procurement price. Sharing details of the decision, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Prahlad Joshi said the government is making continuous efforts to ensure farmers get a fair price for their hard work. For some time now, farmers from various regions had been demanding better prices. Against this backdrop, the government reviewed the entire procurement system and approved the new rates. The move is being seen as a significant step towards boosting farmers' incomes and strengthening the agriculture sector.

Procurement at Rs 1,650 Per Quintal From June 13

According to the revision made by the government, storage-grade onions will now be procured at a minimum assured price of Rs 1,650 per quintal. This new rate will come into effect from June 13. While fixing the procurement price, the prevailing mandi rates and current market conditions were also taken into account. The government wants to ensure that farmers do not have to bear too heavy a burden from the ups and downs in prices. Experts believe the decision has come at a time when a large number of farmers were hoping for better prices for their crop.

Detailed Discussion in Meeting With Officials

Before this decision, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi held an important meeting with senior officials of the Consumer Affairs department. The meeting featured detailed discussions on making the onion procurement system more effective and ensuring its benefits reach farmers directly. The government did not limit itself merely to raising the procurement price, but also stressed making the entire price-setting process more practical and market-based. Officials analysed the situation in various states, production levels and the rates prevailing in mandis, after which the decision was taken.

Not an MSP, but a Safety Shield for Farmers

Onion is a crop whose prices often swing sharply. It is also considered a perishable agricultural produce. This is why the central government does not declare an official minimum support price (MSP) for onions the way it does for wheat and paddy. Instead, to protect farmers, the arrangement of a minimum assured procurement price is implemented under the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF). Through this system, the government, when needed, buys directly from farmers and tries to shield them from falling market prices. The revision in the new rates is also part of this very arrangement.

Focus on Both Farmers' Income and Market Balance

The government believes that raising the procurement price will give farmers better incomes and make them feel more confident about selling their produce. At the same time, this step can also help maintain the balance of prices in the market. When the government procures at a fair rate, farmers are not forced to sell their crop cheaply out of compulsion. This brings stability to the agriculture sector and also encourages production. Experts say that if farmers keep getting better prices consistently, they may continue to prioritise onion cultivation in the future as well.

Direct Benefit for Farmers in Major Producing States

Once the new procurement price is implemented, farmers in the country's major onion-producing states are expected to benefit directly. Market experts believe this will strengthen farmers' confidence and send out a positive message across the agriculture sector. Under the new system starting June 13, the minimum assured procurement price of Rs 1,650 per quintal will provide farmers a strong safety shield. This initiative of the government is not limited to immediate relief alone; its aim is also to strengthen farmers' economic condition and make the agriculture sector more stable. In this light, the decision is being viewed as an important relief package for onion growers.
