Domestic cooking gas consumers must complete biometric Aadhaar authentication (BAA) for their active connections to continue receiving government subsidy support. For households that fail to verify their credentials, newly booked domestic refill cylinders will not carry the subsidy benefit until the process is completed. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas shared detailed updates on the initiative, emphasizing that verifying identities is necessary to keep financial relief flowing directly into the bank accounts of legitimate beneficiaries without disruption.
Core Reasons Behind Enforcing Biometric Identification for Cooking Gas
The transition to mandatory biometric identification is designed to guarantee that subsidized domestic LPG cylinders reach only verified, eligible households. Connecting each individual gas account to a verified Aadhaar record curbs the unauthorized diversion of domestic cylinders toward commercial and industrial establishments. Furthermore, the system detects and removes duplicate, inactive, or ineligible accounts, making the entire welfare distribution network far more accountable and targeted. The administration has clarified that the intent is not to cut off any eligible family from cooking fuel, which is why several easy verification pathways have been put in place.
How the New Verification Guidelines Affect Consumers
The revised protocol divides consumers into two clear categories based on their current verification status. Households that have already completed their biometric Aadhaar authentication are completely exempt from any further paperwork or repeating the process. These families will continue receiving their subsidized refill deliveries seamlessly, precisely as before. In contrast, consumers who have postponed the biometric check will see the subsidy component withheld on new cylinder bookings. As soon as an unverified subscriber finishes the biometric process through any available route, subsidized refill bookings will be restored immediately.
Three Practical Ways to Complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication
To eliminate hassle for the public, oil marketing companies have introduced three distinct channels to complete the identity check. The first option is available right at the doorstep during refill drop-off, where delivery personnel can capture the customer biometric data on the spot using their authorized oil company mobile app. The second avenue allows consumers to walk into their local distributor showroom or office, where agency staff can execute the verification using dedicated counter devices. The third route offers completely self-guided electronic KYC from home using a smartphone.
Subscribers can choose the official application corresponding to their respective LPG provider. Indane customers can use the IndianOil ONE App, Bharat Gas subscribers can register their verification via the HelloBPCL App, and HP Gas consumers can complete the steps through the HP PAY App. For users seeking step-by-step visual guidance on finishing e-KYC on their own, video tutorials have been published on the official PMUY portal.
Nearly Ninety Percent of Active Consumers Already Verified
Official records show that as of 19 September 2026, a total of 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers had completed their biometric Aadhaar authentication, achieving an 89.9 percent nationwide coverage rate. Consumers were originally asked to finish the verification by 30 June 2026. To give customers ample opportunities and avoid sudden service interruptions, the deadline was subsequently pushed back through multiple extensions, moving to 31 July, 7 August, 15 August, 23 August, 31 August, 7 September, and ultimately 14 September 2026.
Extensive Outreach Efforts Driven by Fuel Retailers Since Late 2023
Oil marketing companies (OMCs) have been executing a dedicated countrywide outreach campaign since October 2023. As part of this drive, more than 12 crore SMS and WhatsApp informational alerts have been dispatched to registered mobile numbers. Local distributors and delivery workers have directly reached out to pending consumers who had not yet authenticated their details. Additionally, specialized verification camps have been staged at gas distribution agencies, high-footfall public locations, and remote rural centers to help remaining users complete the requirement conveniently.
