Growing carrots during the Rabi season can turn out to be a highly profitable venture for farmers in the Moradabad region. According to agricultural experts, this crop thrives best in sandy loam soil. Preparing the field requires deep ploughing to ensure the soil becomes loose and crumbly. Farmers should mix 10 tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure into the soil beforehand. The sowing process involves using 4 to 5 kilograms of seeds per acre, planted meticulously by forming ridges and beds. Keeping the crop regularly watered and free from weeds ensures steady growth and a high-quality yield that translates into better market returns.
Selecting the Right Soil and Land
Agricultural scientist Dr Deepak Mehandiratta has highlighted critical technical parameters for successful carrot cultivation. He points out that choosing the correct plot of land is the primary step toward a profitable harvest. Farmers should pick sandy loam soil where water logging never occurs, ensuring proper drainage. The pH level of the soil must ideally range between 6.5 and 7.5. Cultivators must strictly avoid heavy, stony, or uneven terrain, as such ground hinders the proper downward growth of the roots and ruins the final shape and quality of the produce.
Proper Sowing Depth and Plant Spacing
Maintaining accurate distance between plants is essential for optimal root expansion. Farmers should use 3 to 4 kilograms of seeds per acre. The distance maintained between two consecutive rows should range from 20 to 25 centimetres, while the gap between individual plants ought to be kept at 5 to 6 centimetres. Seeds should be placed at a depth of 1.5 to 2 centimetres beneath the soil surface. Regarding nutrient management, well-decomposed organic manure should be mixed into the soil during field preparation prior to planting. Chemical fertilizers must only be applied after getting the soil tested in a laboratory.
Irrigation Schedule and Yield Potential
The very first irrigation must be carried out immediately after the sowing process is completed. Following that, subsequent watering should be done at intervals of 10 to 15 days, depending closely on prevailing weather conditions and the moisture retention capacity of the soil. With proper crop management and diligent care, farmers can successfully harvest roughly 80 to 120 quintals of carrots per acre.
