In a major boost to Bihar's transport infrastructure and regional economic integration, the Union Government has sanctioned a comprehensive highway upgrade project. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the widening of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa stretch on National Highway 22 (NH-22) into a 4-lane corridor. Spanning a total length of 82.578 kilometers, the highway upgrade entails an estimated financial outlay of Rs 3,590.73 crore. The project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), laying down a modern transit backbone across North Bihar.
Strategic Linkage Between Trade Hub and Nepal Border
Serving as a crucial feeder corridor, this highway directly links Sonbarsa on the India-Nepal border with Muzaffarpur, a key economic center located along NH-27 (the East-West Corridor). The expansion will provide immediate relief from severe vehicular congestion in densely populated towns and commercial centers along the alignment, including Muzaffarpur, Muksudpur, Runni Saidpur, Thumma, Dumra, Bhutahi, and Sonbarsa, facilitating smoother movement for both local residents and long-distance commercial freight.
High-Speed Corridor Designed for 100 km/h Travel
Engineered for travel efficiency and heightened road safety, the four-lane highway has been designed to support average vehicle speeds ranging between 80 km/h and 100 km/h. To guarantee uninterrupted high-speed movement and minimize collision risks, the route completely eliminates flat-level median openings. This continuous barrier design enables heavy commercial vehicles and passenger cars to maintain steady speeds without encountering sudden local traffic cross-overs.
Strengthening Freight Grid and Cross-Border Logistics
The upgraded NH-22 section serves a vital strategic function by integrating seamlessly into the National Freight Grid. Operating in tandem with key existing arteries like NH-31 and NH-122, it links the industrial hub of Barauni and prominent logistics hubs along the Ganges river. Furthermore, the corridor is set to streamline cross-border passenger travel and cargo logistics through the nearby land port located at Bhitamore, facilitating seamless international trade operations.
Infrastructure Snapshot: Bridges, ROBs, and Flyovers
To deliver a smooth transit experience over complex geographic and railway intersections, the project includes extensive civil engineering works. Construction plans feature 7 major bridges, headlined by a prominent 340-meter structure spanning the perennial Bagmati river. Additionally, the route incorporates 3 railway overbridges (ROBs) to bypass rail tracks smoothly, along with 2 elevated flyovers extending 1,170 meters and 270 meters respectively, as highlighted in official details released on X.
