Bihar is preparing to stake its claim as one of India's major leather and footwear manufacturing states, with a mega industrial park in Muzaffarpur district now taking shape and its first production units already running.
A 140 crore rupee push in Motipur
Under the state government's industrial policy, the Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority (BIADA) is developing a Mega Leather Footwear and Accessories Park on nearly 62.17 acres of land at Mahuwal in the Motipur block of Muzaffarpur district. The project, being built at a cost of around Rs 140 crore, is being seen as a significant step towards giving leather products made in Bihar recognition not just in the domestic market but in global markets as well.
Jobs at home, an end to migration
The state government's broader goal behind the project is to boost industry within Bihar so that local employment opportunities grow and young people no longer have to leave the state in search of work. With that objective, the park is being equipped with modern facilities, including upgraded infrastructure for industries, a Common Facility Centre (CFC), a training centre, better roads, electricity and other essential amenities, so that entrepreneurs face no hurdles once they are ready to begin production. Departmental officials say production has already begun in 24 industrial sheds within the leather cluster.
From shoes to belts, production is already running
These units are currently manufacturing a range of leather goods, including shoes, chappals, bags, belts and other leather products. The project is expected to generate employment for thousands of people, both directly and indirectly, once it is fully operational.
Women driving the cluster
One of the standout features of the park is the scale of women's participation in it. According to officials, more than 1,000 Jeevika Didis have already found employment there. Plans are also underway to expand the leather cluster further under the Mahila Udyami Yojana (Women Entrepreneur Scheme), with the aim of bringing more women into self-employment and entrepreneurship. Officials expect this to also strengthen the rural economy in the surrounding areas.
Taking on Kanpur and Chennai
Until now, the leather industry in India has largely been dominated by Tamil Nadu's Chennai and Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur. But with this mega park coming up in Muzaffarpur, Bihar is positioning itself to become the country's next big centre for leather manufacturing, a shift expected to give fresh momentum to the state's overall industrial development.
Betting on the 'Made in Bihar' label
Officials say that with modern technology, trained manpower and stronger production capacity, the leather goods made here will be competitive not just in the domestic market but for exports as well. The state government's aim is to establish the 'Made in Bihar' brand at both the national and international levels. It believes the Mega Leather Footwear and Accessories Park will not only turn Bihar into a new hub for the leather industry, but will also strengthen the state's economy by generating jobs, empowering women and boosting industrial investment.
