Vehicle owners often ponder how much petrol would cost if ethanol were not blended into fuel supplies. The government addressed this economic and technical equation during the ongoing session of Parliament. In a written response in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi explained that the ethanol blending policy has played a crucial role in buffering Indian consumers against global oil price shocks while reducing reliance on crude imports.
Impact of Ethanol Blending on Retail Fuel Rates
According to data submitted to Parliament, during the Middle East crisis when international crude oil prices spiked to approximately $135 per barrel, petrol prices in India could have escalated to around ₹125 per liter without ethanol blending. However, due to the implementation of the ethanol blending program, raw crude availability, and optimized procurement strategies by oil marketing companies, petrol was supplied to consumers at an average rate of about ₹94.77 per liter. This pricing framework cushioned domestic users from extreme international market volatility.
Government Clarification on Engine Safety and Performance
Addressing concerns regarding potential engine damage from E20 petrol, the government clarified that no confirmed evidence suggests harm to either old or new vehicle engines. Prior to rolling out E20 fuel, extensive testing was conducted in collaboration with technical bodies and industry stakeholders, including ARAI, SIAM, Indian Oil, and major auto manufacturers. These evaluations examined engine efficiency, overall performance, and component durability, finding no significant adverse effects.
Widespread Adoption Across Millions of Vehicles
Ethanol-blended petrol has been in active commercial use across India for several years. Current figures indicate that more than 20 crore two-wheelers and over 3 crore petrol passenger cars are currently running on ethanol-blended fuel across the country. Despite this massive operational scale, there have been no widespread reports or verified claims of premature engine failure, component corrosion, or accelerated part wear attributable to blended fuel.
Economic and Agricultural Benefits of Ethanol Policy
Beyond price stabilization at fuel stations, the ethanol blending initiative provides direct support to the agricultural sector. Oil marketing companies procure ethanol derived from agricultural feedstocks, creating an additional income stream for farmers and boosting the rural economy. Furthermore, substituting imported crude with domestically produced ethanol reduces foreign exchange expenditure and enhances long-term national energy security. The program is projected to remain a key pillar for sustainable energy goals and rural economic growth in the coming years.
