Government tax revenues registered impressive growth during August, driven by a sharp rise in collections. Official fiscal data shows that gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) receipts expanded by 14.8 percent year-on-year to touch ₹1,99,853 crore in August 2026. While the tally fell slightly short of the ₹2.11 lakh crore benchmark recorded in July 2026, the underlying trend points to strong revenue momentum compared to the ₹1,74,116 crore collected in August 2025.
Import Taxes and Domestic Sales Drive Gains
A closer look at the components reveals that robust cross-border trade played a decisive role in lifting overall receipts. Gross import GST surged by 29 percent year-on-year to ₹62,604 crore in August 2026, up from ₹48,546 crore reported during the corresponding month of 2025. Domestic economic activity also maintained its steady growth trajectory, with gross domestic GST collections rising 9.3 percent to reach ₹1,37,249 crore, compared to ₹1,25,570 crore in August 2025.
Revenue Breakdown Across Tax Categories
The month's collections comprised ₹38,413 crore under Central GST (CGST), ₹46,316 crore under State GST (SGST), and ₹52,520 crore under Integrated GST (IGST). On a cumulative basis, total gross GST revenue for the first five months of the financial year (April to August 2026) climbed 11 percent to reach ₹10,42,757 crore, highlighting sustained compliance and economic resilience across key commercial sectors.
Higher Tax Refunds Impact Net Figures
Tax authorities processed substantial refund payouts during the month, releasing ₹31,795 crore in total GST refunds, marking a 67.9 percent increase from ₹18,935 crore in August 2025. Domestic refunds jumped 72.6 percent to ₹18,490 crore, while export-related refunds disbursed via the ICEGATE platform climbed 61.8 percent to ₹13,305 crore. Consequently, net GST collections after accounting for refunds stood at ₹1,68,057 crore, registering an 8.3 percent increase over ₹1,55,181 crore recorded in August 2025.
57th GST Council Meeting Set for September 12
With revenue figures set, policymakers are shifting attention to upcoming administrative and rate-related discussions. The 57th GST Council meeting is scheduled to convene in New Delhi on September 12, 2026. Prior to the main ministerial gathering, an official officer-level preparatory meeting will take place on September 11, 2026, to finalize the key agenda items.
