In a significant push toward modernizing the national transporter and prioritizing commuter safety, Indian Railways has cleared a substantial financial outlay for crucial infrastructure upgrades. A total of three major projects amounting to ₹675 crore have been officially approved to streamline train traffic, boost cargo handling capacity, and fortify safety mechanisms across key operational zones. These strategic interventions are designed to upgrade rail corridors spanning Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, ultimately minimizing operational bottlenecks and accident risks.
Kavach 4.0 Deployment in Moradabad Division
The administration has sanctioned ₹170 crore for the installation of the advanced Kavach 4.0 system across the remaining 712 route kilometers in the Moradabad division of Northern Railway. This indigenous automated train protection system serves as a critical safeguard against signal anomalies and human oversight. In the event of a danger signal being passed or speed limits being breached, the system automatically applies brakes and regulates train speed to avert severe head-on or rear-end collisions, thereby substantially lowering mishap risks.
Modern Signaling Overhaul Across Samastipur Stations
To make train operations more reliable in the East Central Railway network, a massive signaling upgrade has been greenlit for 21 stations within the Samastipur division. An investment of ₹233 crore has been earmarked to replace legacy panel-based interlocking systems with state-of-the-art electronic interlocking technology. This computer-driven architecture facilitates efficient maintenance, faster fault detection, and seamless train traffic management. Furthermore, this electronic infrastructure will lay down the vital groundwork required for deploying the Kavach system in the region at a later stage.
New Bypass Line Between Adra and Joychandipahar
To ease freight congestion and expedite cargo movement, a brand-new 11-kilometer bypass line will be constructed between Adra and Joychandipahar under South Eastern Railway. Backed by an allocation of ₹272 crore, this project is primarily aimed at freeing up capacity for freight trains. By bypassing saturated corridors, industrial goods transportation will become considerably smoother, allowing the network to handle significantly higher freight traffic volumes once construction concludes.
Holistic Enhancement of Rail Infrastructure
While each of these three sanctioned projects serves a distinct operational purpose, their collective goal is to reinforce the overall robustness of the rail network. From deploying life-saving safety technology in Moradabad and upgrading electronic signaling in Samastipur to unblocking freight routes in West Bengal, these initiatives mark a comprehensive step forward in upgrading passenger and cargo transit across the country.
