A new chapter in the history of Indian railways is set to begin as the country prepares for the launch of its inaugural hydrogen train. Scheduled to commence operations on July 17, the train will run between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. The inauguration of this historic service will be performed by the Prime Minister. Currently, the train is being introduced as a pilot project. If this trial proves successful and meets performance expectations, there are firm plans to expand the adoption of this technology to other railway routes across the nation in the future.
Technical Mechanics and Environmental Impact
This train marks a radical departure from traditional diesel or electric locomotives. It is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system with a capacity of 1,200 kilowatts. The propulsion is generated through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, which produces the electricity required to drive the train. A key advantage of this process is that it emits only water vapor rather than harmful exhaust fumes. This initiative is a major step toward establishing the railway as a clean and green transport network, significantly reducing pollution levels in the process.
Route, Capacity, and Operational Details
The hydrogen train will operate on an 89-kilometer rail section connecting Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. Regarding its daily operations, the train is slated to make two trips, covering a total distance of approximately 356 kilometers. In terms of passenger capacity, the train is equipped with seating for 682 passengers, while its total carrying capacity is estimated at around 2,600 passengers. The route has been specifically chosen to facilitate the testing and evaluation of this innovative technology.
Investment and Infrastructure Development
The railway authorities have approved an investment of 111.83 crore rupees for this pilot project. Under this initiative, existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains have been retrofitted and converted into hydrogen-powered units. The development includes not just the modifications to the train itself, but also the construction of comprehensive supporting infrastructure, including hydrogen production facilities, storage tanks, refueling stations, and advanced safety equipment.
Stringent Safety Protocols
Given that hydrogen is a highly flammable gas, the railway has implemented comprehensive safety measures to ensure passenger protection. The train is equipped with sophisticated sensors capable of detecting any potential hydrogen leaks immediately. Furthermore, the system includes fire monitoring capabilities and continuous safety surveillance. The specialized storage tanks used in the train have been developed in compliance with international standards, and the system is designed to automatically trigger safety protocols in the event of any abnormal situation or emergency.
