Indian Railways has initiated a major push toward accelerating freight logistics by conducting trial runs for its first Vande Bharat cargo train prototype. Built to bring high-speed performance to goods transport, the 16-coach freight EMU registered a top speed of 145 km/h along the Kota-Nagda-Sawai Madhopur high-speed rail corridor in Rajasthan. This modern freight train is engineered to streamline fast delivery services for e-commerce platforms, time-sensitive parcel shipments, and cold-chain logistics networks across the nation.
High-Speed Test Runs and Month-Long Evaluation Protocol
Designed and manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the prototype freight train underwent its initial trials on the Kota division network in Rajasthan. Operational testing began with baseline runs executed at speeds of 120 km/h and 135 km/h. On the return journey, the train successfully reached 145 km/h, setting the peak speed record for the opening day of trial operations.
Railway authorities have scheduled an intensive one-month evaluation period to rigorously test the cargo train under various load conditions and operating environments. Technical teams will conduct at least two round-trip trials daily to analyze performance in both empty and fully loaded configurations. Key evaluation metrics include braking distances, cornering stability on sharp curves, traction capabilities, energy consumption patterns, signaling responsiveness, automatic door locking mechanisms, and overall structural safety.
Specialized Rake Configuration and Freight Payload Capacity
Unlike conventional slow-moving goods trains, this electric multiple unit (EMU) freight train is custom-built for high-speed logistics. The 16-coach formation consists of 12 dedicated parcel coaches, 2 specialized refrigerated coaches for temperature-sensitive cargo, and 2 trailer coaches. Together, this design provides a total payload capacity exceeding 397 tonnes. To handle heavy loads while maintaining high speeds safely, each axle is engineered to support a load capacity of over 20 tonnes.
Modern Safety Integration and Automated Operational Features
The cargo Vande Bharat incorporates state-of-the-art railway technologies, including the indigenous KAVACH automatic train protection system to prevent collisions. For perishable goods such as food items and medical supplies, the train provides climate-controlled refrigerated storage and upgraded ventilation systems. Security and operational safety are further bolstered by automated door locking mechanisms: all doors lock automatically when the train exceeds a speed of 5 km/h, and the propulsion system ensures the train cannot accelerate unless every door is completely shut and verified locked.
