Residents of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh no longer have to worry about the logistical hurdles of sourcing and handling heavy LPG cylinders. Mirroring the infrastructure seen in major metropolitan cities, the district has officially rolled out a piped natural gas (PNG) supply network. Managed under the oversight of GAIL Gas India, the project aims to connect households directly to a continuous gas supply. This modern system operates on a metered basis, ensuring that residents are billed strictly according to their actual consumption, similar to how electricity and water utilities function.
Project Scope and Implementation
The groundwork for this initiative began in 2019, when the initial proposal for the gas pipeline network was drafted. Following formal approval, the project has been executed with urgency. The expansion plan covers the entirety of the Mirzapur municipal area along with a 10-kilometer radius encompassing nearby rural villages. To ensure stable pressure and supply across the region, multiple gas distribution stations are being constructed, which will serve as the backbone of the local gas delivery infrastructure.
Infrastructure Development by Onyx Engineering Limited
The responsibility for laying the pipeline network has been entrusted to Onyx Engineering Limited. The company has utilized heavy-duty machinery to install the pipelines efficiently. Visible progress has already been achieved in the Barkachha Kala village, where the pipeline is now fully operational. Residents in this area have transitioned to using piped gas for their daily cooking needs. A local DCU unit has been installed within the village, which acts as the storage point before the gas is routed through the pipeline grid to individual homes.
Benefits and Future Prospects
According to the project manager, the primary objective is to bring more than 50,000 households into the network. Construction of the primary pipeline infrastructure is nearing completion, and new connections are being issued systematically following rigorous safety testing. By shifting to this metered system, households will find managing their utility expenses simpler, as they will only need to clear their dues on a monthly basis based on the exact quantity of gas consumed. This transition marks a significant upgrade in civic amenities for the people of Mirzapur.
