Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), India's premier public sector energy company, has embarked on a landmark journey to bolster the nation's energy security. The energy major has initiated the drilling of its inaugural deepwater exploratory well located in the Mahanadi offshore basin off the coast of Odisha. This development represents the beginning of a highly ambitious national campaign aimed at tapping into the extensive deep and ultra-deepwater hydrocarbon resources hidden beneath India's territorial waters.
Launching Drilling Under the Samudra Manthan Mission
According to an official statement released by the state-run corporation, the drilling activities are being carried out under the Union government's strategic 'Samudra Manthan' mission. The exploratory well, designated as MN-DW18-1-H-D, has officially commenced its drilling operations. In terms of geographical location, the drilling site is situated approximately 23 nautical miles away from the Konark discovery area near the Odisha coast. Recent successful discoveries in both the Utkal and Konark sectors have significantly validated the geological potential for rich hydrocarbon reserves within the Mahanadi offshore basin, making this new drilling campaign a logical next step.
National Energy Strategy and Policy Shift
Massive Hydrocarbon Potential in Marine Basins
Geoscientists estimate that India's eastern and western offshore basins together hold a massive potential exceeding 560 crore metric million tonnes of oil equivalent (MMTOE) in hydrocarbon resources. Recent exploratory successes in the Cauvery, Mahanadi, and Andaman basins have further boosted confidence in India's marine energy wealth. ONGC highlighted that this drilling project is one of the most technologically demanding and challenging deepwater exploration ventures ever undertaken in India. Each successful discovery in this campaign will contribute directly to increasing domestic production, minimizing the heavy reliance on energy imports, and securing long-term energy independence.
In a separate energy initiative, ONGC also recently completed the drilling of its second geothermal well in the high-altitude region of Ladakh, showcasing its diversified approach to clean energy development. These multi-pronged efforts across diverse terrains, from the high peaks of Ladakh to the deep waters of the Bay of Bengal, underscore the company's critical role in steering India towards a self-reliant energy future.
