Understanding the Impact of Weeds
Varieties such as Sawa, Motha, and broad-leaf weeds pose the greatest challenge in paddy cultivation. They effectively drain the soil of essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash. As the paddy plants fail to receive sufficient nutrition, they become stunted or weak, failing to reach their growth potential. Furthermore, these weeds act as hosts for harmful insects and pathogens, increasing the risk of widespread infection within the field, which inevitably degrades the quality of the harvested produce.
Proper Timing and Chemical Application
Successful management depends heavily on the precise timing and quantity of herbicide usage. For immediate control post-transplantation, farmers should apply chemicals within 3 days. It is recommended to use 500 ml of Pretilachlor 50% EC or 1 to 1.5 liters of Butachlor 50% EC per acre. In cases where the initial window for pre-emergence treatment has been missed, the most effective solution 20 to 25 days after transplantation is the application of Bispyribac Sodium 10% SC. For this, 80 ml of the herbicide should be mixed into 150 liters of water and sprayed across each acre.
Precautions for Herbicide Usage
Specific caution is required during chemical spraying to avoid damaging the crop. Ranjod Singh advises that when applying herbicides immediately after transplanting, the field must have 2 to 3 inches of standing water, which should be maintained for at least 4 to 5 days. Conversely, when applying post-emergence spray 20 days later, the soil should have adequate moisture, but there should not be standing water in the field. Always utilize flat fan or floodjet nozzles for consistent application.
Best Practices for Maximum Production
For optimal results, always prepare the herbicide solution using clean and fresh water. Spraying should be carried out during the morning or evening hours when the wind is calm, ensuring the chemicals do not drift onto neighboring crops. Avoid repeated spraying in the same spot, as this can cause the paddy leaves to scorch. Additionally, rather than relying solely on chemical treatments, farmers are advised to perform manual weeding 20 and 40 days after transplantation to keep the fields clear and the crops healthy.
