Indian left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh achieved a major bowling milestone in T20 international cricket by matching the all-time powerplay record. By dismissing New Zealand opening batter Finn Allen, Arshdeep climbed to joint-first place for taking the most powerplay wickets in T20Is among full-member nations, cementing his reputation as an elite new-ball operator in the shortest format of the game.
Equalling Tim Southee's Landmark T20I Bowling Tally
Dismissing Finn Allen gave Arshdeep Singh his 65th career wicket within the opening six overs of T20 international matches. That breakthrough brought him level with New Zealand pacer Tim Southee, who also holds the benchmark of 65 powerplay strikes. In the rankings of bowlers with the most powerplay dismissals against full-member sides, Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani stands third with 62 wickets. Arshdeep already holds the distinction of being India's leading wicket-taker in the T20I format, and securing just one more powerplay strike will place him alone at the top of this global leaderboard.
New Zealand Clinches Seven-Wicket Win in Fifth T20I
Despite Arshdeep's milestone, the Indian team suffered a defeat in the fifth and final T20I clash of the tour. Host New Zealand produced a clinical run chase, beating India by 7 wickets. Tasked with chasing a stiff target of 192 runs set by the Indian batting lineup, the Kiwis comfortably reached the required total in just 18 overs while losing only 3 wickets along the way.
Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips Lead Decisive Chase
The chase was heavily anchored by a devastating third-wicket partnership between Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips. The pair added 86 runs from just 42 deliveries to take the contest away from the Indian bowling attack. Seifert smashed 93 runs off 50 deliveries, a knock laced with 11 boundaries and 5 sixes. Complementing him at the other end, Phillips registered his fourth half-century of the series, remaining unbeaten on 65 runs from 38 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes. Phillips saw the innings through to the finish alongside Bevan Jacobs, who remained not out on 1.
India Seals T20I Series 3-2 as Focus Shifts to One-Dayers
Although New Zealand walked away with the victory in the final encounter, Team India secured the overall bilateral series by a 3-2 margin. The visitors had built an unassailable lead by winning the opening three matches in dominant fashion, before the hosts struck back to capture the remaining games. With the T20 leg now concluded, India turns its focus to the upcoming ODI series, which will feature the return of senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
