Organizers of the upcoming Asian Games in Japan have stepped up efforts to improve accommodation standards for participating cricket squads following widespread concerns regarding venue facilities. The continental multi-sport event, scheduled to take place between September 19 and October 4 across the Nagoya and Aichi regions, had initially drawn criticism from several cricket boards over undersized hotel rooms and temporary dressing setups.
Addressing Accommodation and Facility Concerns
Initial plans for the tournament involved placing players in compact lodging and utilizing tented structures for dressing spaces. These arrangements prompted official discussions between continental cricket administrators and local event organizers. The head of the Japan Cricket Association confirmed that detailed negotiations with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had been underway for an extended period to secure upgraded lodging that meets the requirements of international cricket delegations.
Unique Logistics Across the Host Regions
Unlike traditional major sporting events, the organizers in Japan are not utilizing a single centralized athletes village. Instead, host cities are distributing accommodations across various setups, including commercial hotel properties, cruise ship cabins, and temporary wooden container housing. Objections regarding these arrangements were raised publicly this week by a sports official from Sri Lanka, who highlighted that leading Asian teams had expressed reservations about room dimensions and general infrastructure.
Scale of the Games and Tournament History
Managing logistics for the event presents a significant challenge due to athlete volume. Approximately 17,000 athletes are participating in the upcoming Asian Games, a number that comfortably exceeds the roughly 11,000 competitors who gathered for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Amid these crowd pressures, cricket players are now set to receive enhanced rooming options superior to those assigned to standard participant contingents.
This competition marks only the second instance of cricket being featured in the official Asian Games program. During the previous edition held in Guangzhou, the Indian contingent secured the gold medal. The current cricket tournament is being jointly organized and managed by the Asian Games Organizing Committee alongside the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
