Trading in the domestic foreign exchange market continues to reflect range-bound stability as solid underlying economic momentum and regulatory defense mechanisms counterbalance external headwinds. The USD/INR currency pair has slipped back to the lower boundary of its multi-month 94 to 97 trading territory, where it has fluctuated over the last half year. While resilient domestic output expansion and active central bank oversight provide fundamental underpinning for the rupee, elevated global crude petroleum costs continue to inflate the national import bill, posing a persistent obstacle to a broader structural rally.
Services Upsurge Propels Composite Index to Four-Month Peak
Fresh business survey figures highlight sustained economic dynamism across major sectors in India. The HSBC preliminary composite PMI advanced to 56.7 in October, climbing from 55.9 recorded in September to mark its strongest showing in four months. This acceleration was predominantly anchored by the services sector, where the headline services PMI jumped to 56.2 from 55.2 in the preceding month.
Industrial production presented a slightly mixed yet robust picture. The manufacturing PMI tempered marginally to 54.9 in October compared to 55.1 in September, staying well within positive expansion territory. Supporting this resilience, the sub-index measuring manufacturing output remained solid, while international export commitments expanded at their fastest clip in six months. These upbeat readings closely track the upgraded economic growth projections previously outlined by the Reserve Bank of India.
Reserve Bank Operations and Monetary Policy Path
To curb excessive exchange rate volatility, the Reserve Bank of India has maintained an active presence in the market. Regular institutional intervention alongside targeted steps to suppress dollar demand has helped contain the USD/INR pair within its established 94 to 97 consolidation corridor. Concurrently, an easing in retail price pressures gives the monetary authority scope to pause interest rate hikes during its upcoming December meeting, even though the broader possibility of monetary tightening remains available.
Charlie Lay of Commerzbank observed that a firm policy orientation from the central bank combined with resilient output growth offers clear support to the local currency. However, high energy prices remain a central barrier, expanding India's overall import payments and threatening to widen the current account shortfall. According to the analyst, securing an enduring appreciation in the rupee will demand lower international oil quotations and more dependable foreign portfolio allocations, leaving the USD/INR cross expected to consolidate inside 94 to 97 in the immediate horizon.
Global Currency Dynamics Amid Dollar Retreat
Across the broader currency landscape, the US Dollar met renewed downward pressure through Monday's trading. The AUD/USD pair held firmly above the 0.7000 threshold during the Asian session, lingering close to a one-month high reached earlier in the day as investors sold the greenback. A further retreat in US Treasury bond yields alongside a slight pullback in global oil quotes helped cap the US Dollar's rebound from a three-week low. Speculation that the Reserve Bank of Australia could implement a rate hike in November provided further momentum for the Australian dollar, though further advances paused ahead of the two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting beginning Tuesday.
In Tokyo trading, the USD/JPY pair encountered fresh selling interest on Monday, checking its recovery from its lowest point since September 18 established on Friday. Falling US yields continued to depress the pair, while a relatively hawkish stance from the Bank of Japan offered additional backing to the Japanese Yen. Market participants maintained a measured approach, however, awaiting key policy pronouncements due from both the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan later in the week.
Bullion Recovers as Midterm Elections and Digital Assets Loom
Precious metals staged a tentative comeback, with gold pulling away from near a three-month trough to trade above the psychological $4,000 level during Monday's Asian hours on the back of a softening greenback. Risk sentiment saw some stabilization after US President Donald Trump ruled out immediate military operations targeted at Iran, which triggered a minor softening in crude oil prices. Concurrently, remarks from Federal Reserve representatives indicated no urgent imperative to push interest rates higher immediately.
Conversely, digital assets faced steep selling pressure, with Cardano weakening below the $0.202 price point. The token has now suffered three consecutive weeks of declines exceeding 20% since the start of October, with derivative metrics reflecting a decisive bearish bias alongside deteriorating on-chain indicators. Looming over all asset classes are the November 3 US midterm elections. While futures markets anticipate another monetary policy tightening from the Fed in December, the legislative battle to command the US Congress could drastically shift fiscal policy projections, ultimately exerting indirect sway over American monetary direction through 2027.
