The Indian national cricket team is facing a severe fitness crisis as a succession of core players remain sidelined due to varying injury concerns. Responding swiftly to the mounting medical list, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia will travel to the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru on Sunday. He is scheduled to hold a comprehensive review meeting with Head of Cricket VVS Laxman to assess the rehabilitation protocols and physical recovery timelines of all affected players.
High-Level Review Scheduled at Centre of Excellence
The upcoming consultation in Bengaluru aims to thoroughly examine the medical setup and recovery strategies currently being administered at the facility. Reports suggest that national team head coach Gautam Gambhir and selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar may also join the proceedings virtually. The primary focus of the meeting will be to evaluate player management practices, address underlying structural gaps in the sports science setup, and establish clear timelines for bringing key cricketers back to competitive fitness.
Detailed Status of Injured National Team Players
Multiple players across formats are currently dealing with physical setbacks. Premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has experienced fluid retention and knee swelling, requiring an extended recovery period. Although initial assessments suggested that both Bumrah and opening batsman B Sai Sudharsan might be available for at least one of two upcoming Test matches, medical specialists at the CoE opted for a conservative approach to avoid long-term damage.
Sai Sudharsan had resumed batting practice for 75 minutes daily, yet persistent pain in his left big toe continues to prevent his match readiness. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy suffered hamstring and quadriceps strains after attempting to boost his bowling pace by approximately 7 to 8 km/h. Meanwhile, Washington Sundar is sidelined with a thigh muscle strain, and Harshit Rana is recovering from muscle strain. Fast bowler Akash Deep remains out of action for the longest duration owing to a stress fracture sustained during Bengal's defeat in the Ranji Trophy semi-finals.
Rehabilitation of White-Ball Specialists and Sports Science Workload
The facility in Bengaluru is also managing several white-ball specialists. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is receiving treatment for a thigh muscle strain, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Prince Yadav are undergoing rehabilitation for muscle strains. This high volume of injured athletes has placed significant workload pressure on the sports science department. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the department has lacked a dedicated head since the resignation of Nitin Patel in early 2025.
Tensions Over Injury Timelines and Player Release Standards
The management of player injuries has highlighted underlying friction between the national selection committee and the CoE medical staff. Disagreements have reportedly surfaced regarding estimated return schedules and instances where players were cleared or released before fulfilling all established fitness parameters. Furthermore, selection officials expressed dissatisfaction after Harshit Rana arrived in England noticeably overweight. As speculation builds over the management of player workloads, observers will closely watch whether Saikia and Laxman address press queries following their Sunday meeting.
