Veteran swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has earned a recall to the Indian national T20I squad after a four-year absence for the upcoming five-match tour of New Zealand. In a notable omission, frontline fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has not been included in the selection. Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been appointed to lead the side as captain, with Tilak Varma stepping in as vice captain. Meanwhile, leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has been dropped from the touring party.
Veteran Pacer Reclaims National Spot After Four Years
The 36-year-old seamer is making his return to international cricket four years after his previous appearance, which also took place on New Zealand soil in November 2022 right after the T20 World Cup. Following that outing, he remained outside national contention until putting together two standout campaigns in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His showing in IPL 2026 proved particularly decisive, as he claimed 28 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 7.95. That proficiency with swing at the top of the innings and precision during the closing overs persuaded selectors to restore him as the spearhead of the pace attack.
Wicketkeeping Options and Emerging Talents in the Lineup
The 16-member touring unit balances established performers with younger prospects. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan have both been selected as wicketkeeping choices. The batting and all-round depth features Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Reddy, Naman Dhir, and Prince Yadav. Bhuvneshwar will share seam-bowling duties alongside Mayank Yadav and Arshdeep Singh, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav provide specialized spin options.
Complete Schedule Across Formats on the Kiwi Tour
India faces an extensive assignment across three formats during their time in New Zealand. The five-match T20I rubber begins on October 22 with the opener scheduled in Christchurch. Action continues with the second fixture on October 24, followed by the third match on October 27. The fourth clash is set for October 30, before the T20I series concludes with the fifth and final encounter on November 1 in Hamilton.
Once the shortest format concludes, the touring team will contest a five-match One Day International series against the hosts. The opening ODI takes place on November 4 at Eden Park. Following the completion of the 50-over contests, both sides will compete in a two-match Test series.
