Cricketer Abishek Porel Remanded to 3-Day Police Custody in Rape Case, Search Underway for Second Accused

Bengal cricketer Abishek Porel has been sent to 3 days of police custody by a Chinsurah court following his arrest in a rape case. Investigators reveal a second accused is also being sought.

Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals player Abishek Porel faces deepening legal troubles following his arrest by the Hooghly district police. Mogra police officers took Porel into custody on Monday night from his residence located in Dum Dum, North 24 Parganas district. Upon being produced before the Chinsurah district court, the bench rejected his bail application and remanded the wicketkeeper batter to three days of police custody for interrogation.

Investigation Reveals Second Accused in the Case

Police proceedings have uncovered that the case involves more than one perpetrator. Investigators confirmed that along with Abishek Porel, one of his friends has also been officially named as an accused in the complaint. The second individual remains at large, and police teams are conducting raids to trace his whereabouts and determine his involvement in the alleged crime.

Allegations Made by Medical Student

The criminal complaint was lodged by a female medical student studying in Karnataka. According to her statement, she had been in a relationship with Porel, during which they had also traveled abroad together. She alleged that Porel engaged in sexual intercourse under the false pretext of marriage and subsequently reneged on his promise while denying their relationship. The complainant noted that a dispute had escalated between them approximately one and a half years ago, resulting in a visit to a police station, although no formal case was registered at that time.

Seizure of Electronic Devices and Legal Charges

To prevent any potential dissemination of the complainant's private photographs, the court ordered the immediate seizure of Porel's electronic devices. Mogra police registered the case under appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) alongside relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act. The seized hardware is currently undergoing technical investigation.

Calcutta High Court Hearing Adjourned to September 14

The matter was also brought before the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday. During the hearing in the court of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, the state government presented a progress report detailing the actions taken following the arrest. The state requested additional time to conduct further investigation into the allegations. Acceding to the request, Justice Bhattacharyya adjourned the proceedings and listed the case for its next hearing on September 14.
