Following an invitation for applications across five designated positions, former Indian off-spinner Ramesh Powar has emerged as the strongest contender to take charge as the new head of the selection committee.
International Playing Career and Recent Coaching Tenures
Between 2004 and 2007, Ramesh Powar donned the national jersey in 2 Test matches and 31 One Day Internationals for India. After ending his playing career, he transitioned seamlessly into coaching and player development across the domestic and national circuits. In the previous domestic season, he served as head coach for Gujarat's senior men's team before deciding to step away and seek new administrative and scouting challenges in the sport.
Extensive Coaching Background and Stint at the NCA
Powar brings extensive experience in player management, talent evaluation, and elite coaching. He served two separate stints as head coach of the Indian senior women's national cricket team. During his second spell, an administrative realignment led him to the National Cricket Academy, where he worked as a dedicated spin-bowling coach under the men's developmental umbrella led by VVS Laxman. His proven familiarity with young cricketers and his track record across domestic and global platforms make him an ideal fit for leading the junior selection panel.
Mandate Across Age-Group Squads Up to Under-22
The reconstituted junior selection committee will play an instrumental role in shaping the future of Indian cricket by overseeing talent identification and squad formation up to the Under-22 level.
