Despite being well under the age limit of 19, the primary reason behind his exclusion lies in a specific Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) guideline designed to regulate age-group participation.
The 2016 BCCI Rule on Under-19 World Cup Eligibility
In 2016, the BCCI introduced a strict directive regarding youth cricket participation. Under this regulation, a cricketer is permitted to feature in only a single edition of the U-19 World Cup during their career. Even if a player makes their U-19 World Cup debut at an exceptionally young age of 15 or 17 and remains under 19 for subsequent editions, they cannot be selected for a second U-19 World Cup. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi already featured in the 2026 U-19 World Cup. Because he has completed his single allowed U-19 World Cup cycle, the national selectors chose not to block a position for other emerging talents in age-group bilateral series. This rule has a precedent in Indian cricket; spin-all-rounder Washington Sundar was similarly ruled out of participating in the 2018 U-19 World Cup despite meeting the age criteria.
Australia U-19 Tour of India: Dates, Formats, and Venues
The Australia Under-19 team is scheduled to begin its tour of India on September 18. The series comprises three 50-over ODI matches followed by two multi-day fixtures. All three ODI matches will take place in Rajkot on September 18, September 21, and September 23. Following the white-ball leg, the teams will shift focus to the red-ball format. The first multi-day match will be held in Rajkot from September 27 to September 30. The second multi-day encounter will be played from October 5 to October 8 at the 'B' Ground of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Selection Highlights: Focus on Aryaveer Sehwag and Anvay Dravid
The 15-member ODI squad includes leg-spin all-rounder Aryaveer Sehwag and wicketkeeper-batter Anvay Dravid. Notably, neither player was named in the squad for the two multi-day games. Aryaveer Sehwag is currently competing for the West Delhi Lions in the 2026 Delhi Premier League (DPL), where he has played two matches so far. This marks Aryaveer's maiden call-up to the India U-19 ODI setup. On the other hand, Anvay Dravid has previous experience within the national U-19 environment.
